Rallies in Bangladesh on Tuesday

Dhaka, Jan 4 (IANS): The Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Awami League have been permitted to hold rallies in front of their headquarters on Tuesday to mark the second anniversary of the tenth national polls.

The BNP marks it because its demand for polls under a neutral caretaker was not accepted. It observes January 5 as "Murder of Democracy Day", while the ruling Awami League observes it as "Democracy Protection Day", bdnews24 reported on Monday.

Dhaka South City Mayor Sayeed Khokan said the Awami League will have to hold its rally at the Bangabandhu Avenue while the BNP will do so at the Naya Paltan.

“We discourage street rallies that cause trouble for the people,” he said.

He said it is the city corporation, which gives permission to hold rallies on streets, though a security clearance from the police is needed, especially for use of megaphones.
