Udupi, Sep 1: Addressing Congress workers here recently, former chief minister M Veerappa Moily making a harsh prediction stated that the days of the Karnataka Development Front (KDF) government are numbered.

Elaborating on the matter, Moily said chief minister H D Kumaraswamy was likely to handover the power to deputy chief minister B S Yediyurappa. However, there would be a question mark on the longevity of the government headed by Yediyurappa. The only achievement of KDF he opined was in renaming the programmes of the Union Government and claiming them as its own, he declared sarcastically.

According to Moily the Congress party was committed to the welfare of weaker sections and was responsible for the implementation of land reforms and CET, which had benefited thousands of poor people and students. He declared proudly that it was the Congress Government, which was responsible for setting up the Electronics City in Bangalore which then on lead to the establishment of IT giants such as Infosys and Wipro there. It was under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government that international flights from Bajpe airport near Mangalore had become operational, he informed.

Further lauding the efforts of UPA he said that it was the UPA which was responsible for the four-laning of Surathkal-Kundapur stretch of National Highway 17, and he urged his party workers to propagate these achievements. The Mangalore-Hassan broad gauge line would be inaugurated after the monsoon by Union Railway minister Lalu Prasad and president of All India Congress Committee Sonia Gandhi. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would be inaugurating the Secial Economic Zone at Mangalore shortly, he informed.

Referring to the objections raised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to the Indo-US nuclear deal, he clarified that the UPA Government had however managed to resolve eight of the nine points raised by the communists. And he added that efforts were going on to resolve the remaining objections raised by them.

Moily exhorted Congress workers to work seriously for the ensuing municipal elections. As the civic polls in his opinion were no less than a mini assembly or parliamentary elections, he stated. Also present on the occasion were MLA Gopal Poojary; former MPs Vinaykumar Sorake and I M Jayaram Shetty, former MLAs U R Sabhapathi, Gopal Bhandary, and Vasanth Salian; president of District Congress Committee M A Gafoo.
