Obama, wiping tears, makes new push to tighten gun rules

Washington, Jan 6 (Reuters) : Wiping back tears as he remembered children killed in a mass shooting, President Barack Obama on Tuesday ordered stricter gun rules that he can impose without Congress and urged American voters to reject pro-gun candidates.

Obama made it clear he does not expect gun laws to change during his remaining year in office, but pledged to do what he can to make gun control a theme in the months leading up to the November election to replace him.

In a powerful address in the White House, surrounded by family members of people killed in shootings, Obama's voice rose to a yell as he said the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms needed to be balanced by the right to worship, gather peacefully and live their lives.

Obama has often said his toughest time in office was grappling with the December 2012 massacre of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

"Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad," Obama said, tears rolling down his cheek.

"That changed me, that day," he said, after being introduced by Mark Barden, whose 7-year-old son was killed in the shooting. "My hope earnestly has been that it would change the country."

After that tragedy, the Democratic president failed to persuade Congress to toughen U.S. gun laws. He has blamed lawmakers for being in the thrall of the powerful National Rifle Association gun lobby group.

Obama, comparing the issue to the great civil rights causes of his time, is set to discuss gun violence again during a live televised town hall on CNN on Thursday, and during his State of the Union address next Tuesday.

Vice President Joe Biden is slated to do a series of television interviews on the topic on Wednesday.

The U.S. Constitution's 2nd Amendment gives Americans the right to have arms, a right that is fiercely defended.

Obama laid out executive action he is taking to require more gun sellers to get licenses and more gun buyers to undergo background checks.

Under the changes, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is issuing guidelines intended to narrow exceptions to a system that requires sellers to check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to determine whether buyers have criminal records, are charged with crimes or have mental health conditions that would bar them from owning a gun.

The proposal is "ripe for abuse" by the government, said Chris Cox, an official with the NRA, in a statement, adding that the group will continue to fight to protect Americans' constitutional rights.

Legal challenges to the changes, which are contained in guidance from the ATF, are expected.

it's not the guns that are the problem. It is the people. you think people won't to any harm to society without guns?? i doubt that. religion has been killing people for centuries, so why not ban religion? that was meant to be rhetoric. anyways the number of guns owned and the number of gun related incidents are really disproportionate.. bernie for president. though he should use some of trump's policies. :P.

Such dramatics like wiping tears is not the answer to a wailing parent who has lost his child in a reckless shoot out by children. Gun laws should be made stringent. What is the message Obama is giving the world - that he or his party cannot take firm decisions and stop this blood shed? World will not accept such "Crocodile tears".

Mr.Joesph/Geo..I think you are still not aware of India-Italy rule..According to it, Indian can't become President or Prime Minister of Italy even if he is Italian citizen later..Like that Italian can't become Prime Minister or President of India...If Indian can become Prime Minister, then Italina can also..

    Dear Jaimini P.B., Manipal,Sharjah,

A citizen of India can become a Prime Minister of India.

It is with the president to appoint he or she.

Once a person is married to Indian she is Indian.

The ex-president was ready to appoint her to the Prime Minister position.

Bhakts are still pondering the same issue.

Soniaji truly sacrificed the highest position.

Who was stopping her to become P.M., Nobody. She only consented not to become P.M.

    YOU CAN SEE THE CONSTITUTION.

This is verbatim version of Subbu Swamy Italian law. If this is true then why late Kalam in his autobiography mentioned that, had Sonya wished, he would have appointed her as PM.Kalam did mention that Sonya renounced the offer and nominated MMS instead considering the fact that MMS was the architect of 1991 India's economic reforms. I don't know about you, but between Subbu and Kalam I for one find the latter more trustworthy. For, the same Subbu was sycophant enough to liken Sonya to goddess Lakshmi once and same Subbu's plea against Rahul Gandhi regarding his alleged British nationality was discarded by Supreme Court. You can continue your worship but I have evidence in the form of late Kalam's autobiography, do you have any to substantiate your claim that Sonya shed tears due to the reasons that you have mentioned?

    No sacrifice at all.
Sonya had already purchased a new saree for the swearing in ceremony.
Meanwhile she came to know that Mr. Swamy has sent a letter to Mr. Kalam about why she can not be the PM. And also Swamy would move to the courts if she was given the swearing.
as soon as she smelt this, she played brilliantly the drama of sacrifice.

    Dear Shankar, Mangalore,

    What is swamy???!!!
Was he a President of India,

Read the Autobiography of Late President Abdul Kalam.

The following is copied from a website.

    i quote:

APJ Abdul Kalam was ready to swear Sonia Gandhi in as the Prime Minister after the 2004 polls when he was the President despite pressure from various political leaders before Manmohan Singh was nominated to head the UPA government.
Kalam's stand on the political situation after the Lok Sabha elections lifted the veil on an episode that has been intensely speculated upon that he was reluctant to appoint the Italian-born Gandhi as the country's PM.

In a forthright account of his five-year tenure as President in a book titled "Turning Points", Kalam recalls that had Gandhi staked a claim herself he would have appointed her as it was the only "constitutionally tenable" option available to him.

    Unquote.

Despite the above Soniaji protected Sushma Swaraj from balding her head.

Sushma Swaraj praised Soniaji on the last day of the Parliament session.

That's Subbu Swamy's cock and bull story Shankar which totally contradicts with late Kalam's autobiography. When Swamy couldn't be present at the meeting that took place between prez Kalam, Sonya and MMS, how could he know what transpired there? He's just stretching his imagination too wide for his convenience and you guys are gullible enough to fall for it!
