Bantwal, Jan 8: A student of 10th standard ended his life by hanging himself in his hostel room at Vagga here on Friday January 8.
The deceased, identified as Deeshak (16), was a student of Morarji Desai Residential School.
On Friday morning before breakfast, as other students in the hostel were getting ready for the day, Deeshak came out of his room dressed in uniform and told the other students that he would join them later, and went back inside the room. He then hanged himself from the fan using a clothesline.
The exact reason for taking the extreme step is not known.
Deeshak was the younger among the two sons of the late Devanna Nayak and Shyamala, residents of Vagga. Until second standard, he studied in a government school in Vagga and then started living with his uncle in Mumbai, where he continued his studies till 5th standard. He shifted back to Vagga and joined Morarji Desai Residential School in class 6. His elder brother is in PUC.
Incidentally, his father Devanna also committed suicide by hanging about two years ago. His mother Shyamala has lost vision in both eyes. The boys' grandfather Vagga Gopalkrishna Prabhu is a retired teacher who is now engaged in social service. Deeshak was a talented boy who had won several prizes in various competitions. Though the family had seen difficult times, there were no problems grave enough to drive a young boy to suicide, say locals. It is suspected that he might have been feeling lonely.
Bantwal rural SI Rakshit A K and other police personnel visited the spot and registered a case.
