Governor's rule imposed in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar/ New Delhi, Jan 9 (PTI): Jammu and Kashmir was tonight placed under Governor's rule with the process of new government formation following the death of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed taking some time.

"Governor's rule has been imposed in the state of Jammu and Kashmir," a Home Ministry spokesperson said in Delhi.

The President cleared the recommendation of the Union Home Ministry for imposing Governor's rule on the basis of a recommendation from J-K Governor N N Vohra.

The state had to be put under Governor's rule in view of the reluctance of Mufti's daughter Mehbooba to take oath during the mourning period though her party has already conveyed to the Governor that 28 MLAs of the PDP legislature party backed her for the Chief Minister's post.

79-year-old Sayeed died on Thursday after a brief illness and since then there is a Constitutional vacuum.

PDP's coalition ally BJP has also indicated that it would take a decision on new government formation once the four-day morning period is over tomorrow.

PDP and BJP dismissed speculation about any differences or new conditions between them over formation of new government.

"There are certainly no conditions from our side and there was no meeting of our leaders on government formation.

"We respect the right of the bereaved family of Mufti Sahib to mourn his death," BJP state president Sat Paul Sharma told PTI.

Sharma said he had received a letter from the Governor on government formation but the party will take a decision on it only after Sayeed's fourth day ceremony is observed tomorrow.

"There is no hurry on this issue. We will definitely be meeting after tomorrow's ceremony for Mufti Sahib and take a decision," he said.

Sharma said it was a "historic" coalition between the BJP and the PDP in the state and "we would like it continue".

"We are interested in peace and development in the state and we want this coalition to continue on this path shown by Mufti Mohammd Sayeed," he added.

Senior PDP leader and former Education Minister Naeem Akhtar also dismissed suggestions about any conditions set by either his party or the BJP for forming the new government.

"Mehboobaji is still mourning the great loss... Mufti sahib was not only her father but guide, mentor and inspiration.

"We are not in any condition to discuss government formation at this moment so how can there be any talk of conditions," Akhtar said.

He said the party leadership including the president will discuss and decide on government formation at an "appropriate time".

    Mr. Castilino,
Kashmir is different then rest of India and will always remains a Liability . Kashmir was Muslim majority country ruler by Hindu minority Royal family and Kashmir was handed over to India by its minority Dogra family without the knowledge of it's Citizens. India has paid & may pay a higher price to retain Kashmir. So Kashmir has Governors rule (not president rule)

..as far as KASHMIR is concerned, whether its BJP OR CONGRES OR PDP there must be a stable elected Govt..there should not be petty politics in Kashmir, if PDP wants to ally with Congress then let it be..unstable Govt or power vaccum in Kashmir will have dangerous consequences..as FARUKH ABDULLA said INDIA cant take over POK and Pakistan cant take over Indian J&K, as both are Nuke power..But common people in J&K will suffer due to unstable Govt which leads to militancy..as media reported, ISIS plan its journey from JK, then Assam, Kerala, WB..

    unprecedented & something fishy....?

What prompted governor take this decision in a hurry, that too despite PDP party MLA's affirm their faith in Mrs Mehaboobaji ...? even opposition party is also not demanding for any Governor rule or there is nothing apparently indicate that there is a political vacuum...,
Why governor can't wait for completion of 4 days of official mourning period...?

The whole scenario throw up many questions than answers.

Kashmir is Muslim majority State and it is difficult for BJP to have its own Majority in Legislative assembly, So it may be doing Operation Kamala in Dal Lake with left over corrupt money from Janardana Reddy, Yeddy & Jutley Saheb.

    Dear Girish.
Please dont spread some thing not good.
As per law state cant be with out CM for certain time, hence governess rule imposed.
Even if a CM resign also governer will request him to be in post till next CM will take oath.

There may be chances of political drama after this. but in governess rule in State is constitutional requirement as state cant be kept with out CM for long time.

    @ krish,

ok..., Let us wait & watch...,

No need of reflection or premature self righteousness.

If we recall the 2 decades history of Hindustan's state politics with special emphasize on UP under BJP's then honorable CM Kalyan Singh..., there is nothing much left to say the least....,
