Kayaker Poulsen named Denmark's sportsperson of 2015

Copenhagen, Jan 10 (IANS): Kayaker Rene Holten Poulsen has been named Denmark's Sportsperson of the Year 2015.

The Sports Confederation of Denmark and Danish Jyllands-Posten newspaper on Saturday voted to award Poulsen the prize, which is known as Sports Name of the Year and is among the country's top sports prizes, reports Xinhua.

"He has for many years been one of Denmark's strongest and most winning athletes, and he was absolutely superb in 2015. We look forward to following his performance at the Olympics in Rio this summer," DSA Chairman Niels Nygaard said in a press statement announcing the award.

The 27-year-old kayaker from Maribo Kayak Club won a total of six medals in international championships in 2015, including two World Cup medals, three European Championship medals and one European Games bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Danish football star Christian Eriksen beat nominees such as Simon Kjaer and Kasper Schmeichel to grab the prize of Footballer of the Year for the third time in three consecutive years.
