Lakhs take holy dip at Sangam, Haridwar


Allahabad, Jan 14 (IANS): An estimated eight lakh people took a dip in the holy Ganges here on Thursday on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

The first day of the holy bath also kickstarted the 'Magh Mela' on the banks of the holy trinity of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati at Sangam here. 

Women, men and children took the holy dip, praying for prosperity and good health.

Officials told IANS that the main bath was scheduled for Friday when more than 20 lakh people were expected to gather at the Sangam. 

Thousands of people gave away alms to the poor.

Thousands also took a dip at the 'Har ki Pauri' at Haridwar and at many other places in Uttarakhand.
