Udupi, Sep 5: The Krishna Math here, where the birthday of lord Krishna is being celebrated since Madhwacharya’s time, is all set to celebrate Vithal Pindi. The Vithal Pindi will be observed on Wednesday September 5. Preparations are going on in full swing for the D-moment.

‘Vithal’ is one of the names of lord Krishna and ‘Pindi’ is derived from ‘Banda,’ a mud pot containing curd, butter or milk. ‘Mosaru Kudike’ would be the main attraction of this Vithal Pindi on Wednesday. The earthen pots filled with milk and milk products will be hung over specially constructed wooden gopuras at different points of Car Street.

The procession which takes place during Vithal Pindi will move further after breaking these pots. The men dressed in costumes of ‘Yadavas’ who take part in the procession, jostle and compete with one another to break the pots. Persons in ‘Hulivesha’ (tiger dress) will be one of the main attractions of Vithal Pindi.

The idol of lord Krishna made out of clay will be placed in a golden chariot for the procession. Vithal Pindi of Udupi is so famous that devotees from the entire coastal belt throng here.
