Udupi, Sep 6: The Kaup block Congress has made a plea to the Governor to repeal the permission to start a coal-based power plant at Yellur village in Udupi district. Instead, they suggested that permission could be given for starting a gas-based power plant.
Former minister Vasanth Salian, in a memorandum addressed to the governor Rameshwar Thakur, submitted to the deputy commissioner here recently, pointed out that the farmers and fishermen of Yellur and surrounding villages were not in favour of the 1,015-MW coal-based power project as it would have adverse effect on the environment.
The status of the matter is that land acquisition process has already begun for the project at Nandikur, Yellur, Santhur, Pilar, Nadsal and Tenka.
Inspite of the Supreme Court ruling which made it amply clear that no mega industries should be established without studying the “carrying capacity” of the region, the Government had gone ahead with the implementation of the thermal power project, Salian stated criticizing the move.
