Kundapur: Police hold campaign on compulsory wearing of helmet

Kundapur, Jan 22: “The state government has passed the order consenting to the Supreme court order that two wheeler riders should compulsorily wear helmets in the state. The rule is relaxed till January 31. But it will be strictly enforced from February 1 onwards," said Kundapur DSP M Manjunatha Shetty.











He was speaking after setting in motion a rally, informing the people about the mandatory wearing of helmets, held at Kundapur Shastri circle on Friday, January 22.

“The rule that was confined only to a few cities in the state so far, is now implemented throughout the state. It will be strictly followed in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts from February 1. The Police have been conducting awareness campaigns in this regard during the last ten days," said Police Circle inspector P M Diwaker.

Kundapur traffic police station Sub Inspector Jayanna, speaking on the occasion said, "Some allegations that helmet dealers are selling the helmets for up to three times the actual price and also selling helmets without the ISI mark have come to our notice. The awareness campaign has started in Kundapur to educate the people regarding the purchase and use of helmets,” he said.

It was informed that helmet is mandatory for two-wheeler riders and pillion riders and if the rule is not followed, a case will be registered as per the order of the Supreme court.

Staff of Kundapur traffic station, crime division and main police station participated in the rally by wearing helmets and riding bikes.

    People dont worry...once the suit case coming in ends,within few days the compulsory wearing of helmet will be withdrawn.Please bear till then...

    Most of the time its police vehicles specially traffic police vehicles in Mangalore block the roads and cause traffic. Many of u might have observed the way city police and traffic police park their vehicles irresponsibly..

    Good initiative by the concerned authorities about the mandatory wearing of helmet even by the pillion riders in the best interest of safety of the people.But how long,this order will be in force and effective we have to wait and watch.Public should understand the effectiveness of wearing helmet and should follow strictly.It should not be a few days affair and then stop.Besides I fully agree with the comments aired by Anita,Mangalore. It is mere waste of tax payers money.First of all people should be educate and make them to aware about the adverse effect of not wearing the helmets.
    Now it is the time for over charging the helmets by the sellers produced by fake manufacturers.Even if there is no ISI mark,sellers are very smart enough to stamp fake ISI mark on it and sell it.Indian are smart enough to duplicate the things.

    Why only parking ? The police should educate people and also have a campaign in parking 4 wheeler. Since drivers of 4 wheeler vehicles park were ever they want even on the footpath.

    i can see only one cop pillion rider with helmet..if you were to support this cause i wish there were more police pillion riders and less of bikes..what a waste of fuel..was this campaign required? its for safety and people understand in simple language implementation of rules..there is no need for demonstration.wish these cops took over rally against other crimes taking place in Mangalore.likewise you will notice theft of helmets will increase.how can a middle working class person who is the one using a two wheeler afford for every helmet that is robbed.waste of time and money for issues not required..this is what our Government always spends for and not for necessities.

    Though Govt. is implementing this rule as per the orders of Supreme Court, Govt. should not put penalty for one or two months so that people get time to purchase helmets for reasonable price. Sudden implementation of this rule with heavy penalty will make the people purchase at whatever price quoted by the helmet sellers. Even the govt will lose tax due to unauthorised sellers.
