Kundapur, Jan 22: “The state government has passed the order consenting to the Supreme court order that two wheeler riders should compulsorily wear helmets in the state. The rule is relaxed till January 31. But it will be strictly enforced from February 1 onwards," said Kundapur DSP M Manjunatha Shetty.
He was speaking after setting in motion a rally, informing the people about the mandatory wearing of helmets, held at Kundapur Shastri circle on Friday, January 22.
“The rule that was confined only to a few cities in the state so far, is now implemented throughout the state. It will be strictly followed in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts from February 1. The Police have been conducting awareness campaigns in this regard during the last ten days," said Police Circle inspector P M Diwaker.
Kundapur traffic police station Sub Inspector Jayanna, speaking on the occasion said, "Some allegations that helmet dealers are selling the helmets for up to three times the actual price and also selling helmets without the ISI mark have come to our notice. The awareness campaign has started in Kundapur to educate the people regarding the purchase and use of helmets,” he said.
It was informed that helmet is mandatory for two-wheeler riders and pillion riders and if the rule is not followed, a case will be registered as per the order of the Supreme court.
Staff of Kundapur traffic station, crime division and main police station participated in the rally by wearing helmets and riding bikes.
