Mangalore, Sep 8: The feast of Nativity of Our Lady, 'Monthi Fest' can be seen here as being celebrated with a great deal of devotion, gaiety and a lot of enthusiasm by the Mangalorean community. It is that time of the year again, when you can see children gather in large numbers to show their devotion to Mother Mary on her birthday.
This day marks the beginning of the harvest season and hence is being celebrated here as Nativity Day, which is peculiar to the Coastal district only, for instance like the blessing of the holy corn. The celebration started off grandly with the children showering flowers and petals at the idol of Mother Mary, around which is kept the said blessed corn, which is taken home by the devotees once it is blessed by the priest with holy water.
Although, it has been raining quite heavily for the past few days, this morning the rain gods too showered their blessings by falling in drizzles as if participating in the celebrations.
The parishes of Bendur, Kulshekar, Bejai, Valencia, Rosario, Milagres, Urwa, Anjelore and other churches in and around the city too, wore a festive look with bright and vibrant coloured flowers, taking a prominent place in the celebrations.
The devotees carrying items such as rice, corns, flowers, sugarcane, fruits came in processions, from various places to their respective local parishes, as part of the holy celebrations.
The children of the community too under the able guidance of the elders, participated whole heartedly in these spiritual services.
