Berdych reaches Australian Open quarters

Melbourne, Jan 24 (IANS): Sixth seed Tomas Berdych drew on his big-match experience on Sunday to fight past No.24 seed Roberto Bautista Agut 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 and enter the Australian Open tennis quarter-finals here on Sunday.

It was Berdych's sixth straight Australian Open quarter-final.

"I'm just going to stick with the things that I'm doing right now," said Berdych.

"I think it's been a great preparation. It's been a great start to the season."

Berdych struck 66 winners, including 18 aces in a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Spaniard Bautista Agut in three hours and 18 minutes.

"It was a tough fight," added the Czech.

"It's always kind of a fight with Roberto. He has improved quite well in the last couple of months, playing some good tennis. It was not an easy one."

I'm pleased with the way (that) I handled the match. I was playing well tactically, with the right game plan. It was a good challenge for me."
