Hema Malini accused of 'land-grabbing' for dance school

Mumbai, Jan 29 (IANS): Bollywood actor Hema Malini's plans to start a dance academy on a plot of land in Mumbai's Andheri area hit a roadblock on Thursday, as an RTI activist accused her of land-grabbing.

Exactly a month ago, the Maharashtra government had allotted a prime 2,000-square-metre plot to the Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha member in the suburban upmarket Oshiwara area for her proposed dance academy.

According to documents procured under the Right to Information (RTI) by activist Anil Galgali, Hema Malini was allotted the plot worth crores of rupees for a paltry Rs.70,000.

"Not only that, this is the second time Hema Malini has been allotted a prime plot in the Mumbai suburbs. Earlier, in 1997, the (then) Shiv Sena-BJP government had given her a plot of land, but she could not develop it due to CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) issues," Mr Galgali told IANS.

He claimed that though Hema Malini has not yet returned the earlier plot, the current government has allotted her another plot.

Interestingly, Congress Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Shukla was allotted a plot in Andheri West, but following a controversy generated by then Opposition BJP-Shiv Sena, he was forced to surrender it in February 2014 -- just before the Lok Sabha elections.

The details of the allotment to Hema Malini from the Mumbai Suburban District Collectorate showed that she was given the land at only Rs.35 per square metre.

Moreover, she was allotted another plot of 1,741 square metres in the same locality in April 1997 for Rs.10 lakh, but since it fell partly under CRZ, she never developed it, nor did she raise 25 percent of the project cost, but continues to retain that plot, Mr Galgali said.

In the new allotment, the Hema Malini Dance Academy's cultural complex project is expected to cost around Rs.18.49 crore for which she is yet to submit proof of availability of 25 percent funds and resources to raise the balance 75 per cent.

The RTI reply said the academy has only around Rs.3.5 crore -- less than the 25 percent minimum requirement, and it was unclear about the balance 75 percent.

Mr Galgali has shot off a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis pointing out the governement's 'benevolence' to Hema Malini, and how it was flouting the state's policy of taking back reserved land given to various organisations, but allotting a plot reserved for a garden to the BJP MP for her dance academy.

When Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse made the allotment on December 29, 2015, Hema had said how the matter had been buried in bureaucratic red tape for 20 years, but the new government expedited it in record time.

This is absolutely intolerable. Her daughters are married. If she is a MLA of BJP, let her now serve the country. Let the inspired students approach other dance classes. Dance is a hobby and not a career where one can look after the cost of living of personal and family.

We are too many poor people who work hard yet not able to live in a proper house. Why not government of India build houses for such people.
How cheap one can offer and other can accept. Where is your conscious Hema Malini? You have a respect as a wonderful actress. Keep this and serve the poor people in your neighbourhood. Oshiwara is a place where lots of hardworking people live.

All ruling does this type favours in name of Public interest. No political party is clean in this respect. So there is no point in criticising / favouring any political party. If political have any guts, let them accept "Transparency Act" - give their account to the public. Till then all these tamasha will go.Tomorrow one more issue reports or they will create to divert attention. Finally we all forget this issue in our day to day busy money making schedule.

Your question was -Would you support Modi if he was from the Minority.

Well, I am glad I have maturity to see candidates beyond their caste and community. In fact I had not voted my own community once as other candidate was good!. That way I am more secular than fake and loud mouthed sickculars, right?

But then your strange question brings a doubt in me Jossey sir. You not voting Modi is more to do with your dislike of his community more than his image? just asking. Isn’t looking at community of the candidate stoop us to same level of fundamentalist?

you are again trying to bring religion in the voting matter. Well, if the call is only to choose 1 of these 3 from 3 parties, my vote does go to Lobo for sure. But not because of his community, but being bit more credible candidate. Tomorrow if KJ George stands instead of Lobo, then I may not vote. simple.. I too can throw a combination and try to get response from you, but I think i already have the answer!

It is time we Indians grow up and look beyond religion. Lets see who is more worth for the country or constituents. Choseing cahdidate by his caste, community is too narrow mindedness. don't you think?

First of all I lost respect on Hema Malini after little girl died due to reckless driving of her car driver and great cine actress did not show courtesy to meet parents of little girl..It was inhuman attitude..now leave that subject, here she has been granted land at discount rate for dance class..If she really uses it for dance purpose, then I feel it is ok..but if her plan is to grab land for personal use, then she should be booked along with who allotted land to her.

Note: Former CM Mr Ramakrishna Hedge allotted free land to model, odissi dancer Protima Bedi (kabir bedi's ex wife) to start dance academy in Bangalore..I don't know what happened later..but both were GOOD friends..

The land in Palnir, Mangalore sells at 30 lakh a cent and if the land was there, it could fetch 14.82 cr. But, in the Mumbai suburb, one cent costs 1 cr and hence, the land gifted to her is worth 50 cr. at today's price.
