New Delhi, Jan 29 (NDTV): A lawmaker of Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer. Mahendra Yadav has been accused of rioting and arson.
Yadav was allegedly part of a protest yesterday in Nihal Vihar near the outskirts of Delhi, over the alleged sexual assault of a three-year-old.
The police allege that Yadav led a mob that damaged public property and tried to burn vehicles. They also claim the politician and his supporters manhandled policemen, accusing them of delaying action against the alleged attacker, who was a neighbor of the child.
Reacting to the arrest, AAP leader Dilip Pandey tweeted, "Delhi Police busy again arresting AAP MLA instead of ensuring Delhi women safety despite multiple warnings from courts."
He also commented: "Finance Ministry has no fund for security camera. Delhi still a rape capital. Court slammed (it) multiple times, but who cares. DP (Delhi Police) busy hunting AAP MLAs."
Mahendra Yadav is the sixth lawmaker from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's party to be arrested.
Those who were arrested earlier are Akhilesh Tripathi, Somnath Bharti, Commando Surinder Singh, Manoj Kumar and former law minister Jitender Singh Tomar.
Kejriwal has repeatedly accused the Centre of targeting his party through the Delhi police, which reports to the union home ministry.
Yadav represents the Vikaspuri area in Delhi. He was protesting yesterday against the alleged sexual assault of a three-year-old when he allegedly clashed with a police officer.
The lawmaker had allegedly accused the police of not filing a case.
