Tumakuru, Feb 1: A marriage function was abruptly stopped and the alliance was broken by the bridegroom concerned after he grew angry at the fact that Rasam was not among the items served to his people at the function. The two-day marriage function, which was spread over Saturday and Sunday, and was in progress at Kunigal in the district, had to be abandoned as the groom refused to tie the customary 'Taali' around the bride's neck in acknowledgement of having accepted her as his life partner.
As a relative of the bride volunteered to marry the girl, her parents gave their daughter in marriage to this boy. In the meanwhile, a complaint stands registered in the police station at Kunigal against the groom.
The marriage of K P Soumya, daughter of Saubhagyamma and Prakash, residents of Siddhartha Nagar in Kunigal, was to be solemnized with Raju, son of Gowramma and Timmaiah couple from Swatantrapalya near Srirampuram Bengaluru. The marriage function began on Saturday and a number of rituals had been successfully completed. At 7 pm on Saturday, reception was scheduled, but the groom and his relatives had not arrived at the hall till 9 pm. After several phone calls were made, the groom's party arrived at the marriage hall at 9.30 pm, after which the function went on till 11.30 pm.
At about 12.30 am that night, mother of the groom and her daughters sat down for the reception feast. When they demanded for Rasam in between, the cooks said that Rasam had been exhausted as already it was too late. Gowramma and her daughters then fought with the cooks, after which the bride's parents intervened and succeeded in pacifying Gowramma. They promised to get Rasam prepared for Sunday breakfast.
Gowramma however, stuck with her demand for Rasam, and threatened to go back with the groom if Rasam was not served immediately. Parents of the bride, developing cold feet, sought police intervention. Policemen arrived there and advised Gowramma and her family to use common sense and not to spoil marriage for petty reasons. After the police went back, the groom's side refused to take part in further rituals. The groom also said he would not marry the girl, as his parents were not served Rasam. At around 6 am on Sunday, he exited from the marriage venue.
Parents of the bride and other relatives began to shed copious tears at this unexpected turn of events. Govindaraju from Maddur, a relative of the bride, who had come to attend the marriage, came forward to marry the girl. The relatives immediately made arrangements for his marriage with the bride. They have urged the police to take action against Raju and his parents for entering into alliance, agreeing for the marriage, and then backtracking at the last minute for silly reason.
