New Delhi, Sep 12: The lucrative Gulf routes will no longer be the sole domain of public carriers Indian and Air India.

Jet Airways and its subsidiary Jetlite could be the first private Indian airlines given permission to fly there.

Civil Aviation Ministry sources tell CNN-IBN Jet could soon fly to Dubai, Abu Dabhi, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain.

Permissions are likely in a few weeks. But flights cannot start before January, when the government ban on private sector flights to the Gulf is lifted.

The ban dates back to 2004 when private airlines were allowed to fly abroad but kept out of this revenue-generating route

Currently both public carriers together can operate about 85,400 seats weekly to the Gulf. But they are able to utilise just half this number, mostly due to the shortage of aircraft.

Pricing is likely to be competitive. Newer entrants like Jazeera Airways and Ethihad have been very aggressive in pricing.

A Delhi-Kuwait return ticket is available for Rs 10,000. Jet's entry can only make this better.

Another good news for thousands of NRIs residing at GCC countries at last now these passengers can have a nice,on time flight to their homes... good riddance to rude behavioured air india crew members,, re schedules... air pocketings.. etc.  We hope Jet can serve GCC passengers in their hospitality manner but what about thousands of passengers from Saudi ... ??

The so called Pravasi associations .. oversease wings of political parties are only interested in dance competitions.. summer painting camps and now Iftar sangamams.. no one bothered about Mangalore and Kasaragod passengers who always fly to Mumbai and Mangalore.

Political leaders, associations, should bring up this subject to the authorities.. At least we should have one or two direct flighst from Riyadh and Dammam and Jeddah or at least connecting these airports. HOPE authorities listen out appeal

Its a good change , to see jet finally given permission to fly to the gulf this would benifit the passengers, but for now it looks like the permission is to fly from destinatons like Delhi, Mumbai & Kerala , I would love to see Air Deccan Spice Jet & Kingfisher also given permission to fy to the gulf as for Mangalore you have problems with the slots with many flights coming here , hope in the next two years when the new terminal is built we can see more flights...

Gulf sector is the only sector whcih helped AI & Indian to survive. The way they price the locations like M'lore / Calicut- it is shameless. When India was in problem of foreign exchange reserves in 90s, it was gulf Indians who sent their hard earned money to India. Indian Govt could have reciprocated this gesture by liberalising the gulf sector long ago and thus helping those poor Indian labourers who pay heavy air fare to reach home even in emergency.

One can see the service provided by AI/IA for this sector and European sectors by the type of aircrafts put into service in these sectors. The delays of these airlines - the less said the better. I am sure after private airlines are allowed to fly these blood sucking draculas (AI & Indian) will die a natural death without anybody mourning for them. I am full praise for Jet airways for their hospitality and sevice, wish them good luck. Jet Airways- we Gulf Indian welcome you with open heart and red carpet.

Wow, it is a great news. I am sure healthy competition will bring only benefits to end users passengers). We read, Kuwait also is going to be connected to Mangalore soon thru Indian/AI Expreess. So, Saudi Arabian cities are still untouched. Hoping our Aviation ministry will be bit kind enough to hundreds of Mangloreans and Kasargodeans living in Dammam by providing a direct flight soon.

Are there any diplomats / well wishers, who bother of NRI'S in Saudi Arabia? I proudly say, we collected more than 10,000.00 signatures from Mangaloreans  within few days in Eastern province region, for an official letter to our President requesting for the development of Mangalore Airport. Please be informed, 70% of Gulf NRI’s (Mangaloreans) are in Saudi Arabia. "HAMARA NUMBER KAB AYEGA"???
