Indonesia's Mount Soputan erupts


Jakarta, Feb 7 (IANS): Mount Soputan volcano in Indonesia's North Sulawesi province erupted on Sunday, spewing a column of hot ash up to 2.5 km high.

Mount Soputan, located some 60 km from provincial capital Manado, has high potential for further big eruption which is indicated by persistent tremors with amplitude of 41 mm, National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told Xinhua news agency reported.

Several subdistricts in Minahasa Tenggara district were hit by ash and other volcanic matter.

There has not been any immediate reports of casualties and damage.

The 1,874- meter high Mount Soputan is one of Indonesia's active volcanoes. The country has at least 129 active volcanoes.
