Ahead of Modi's Mumbai visit, his wife fasts for slum dwellers

Mumbai, Feb 13 (IANS) : In a development that took many here by surprise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's wife Jashodaben on Friday joined members of an NGO on a day-long token hunger strike in support of slum dwellers here.

Jashodaben -- whose arrival was not known even to the local police -- was flanked by five National Security Guard commandos as she joined 'Good Samaritan Mission' non-governmental organisation's volunteers to demand a halt to demolitions of slums in Mumbai during the monsoon.

"Every year, we witness the inhuman spectacle of hundreds of slums being demolished just before or during the monsoon and people being thrown out in the streets. We are demanding that the authorities concerned should put a stop to this practice," Brother Peter Paul Raj, Good Samaritan Mission founder and ex-aide of Mother Teresa, told IANS at the protest venue.

Jashodaben sat on the token hunger strike for a few hours before departing without much fanfare.

Brother Raj said Jashodaben's presence and support would prove invaluable for the cause of the slum dwellers and their children who are the worst sufferers of demolition activities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to launch the high-profile 'Make In India Week' here on Saturday evening in the presence of a galaxy of VVIPs, including three foreign heads of governments.

Prime ministers Juha Petri Sipila, Kjell Stefan Lofven and Algirdas Butkevicius of Finland, Sweden and Lithuania, respectively, will join Modi at the inaugural function at National Sports Club of India ground, Worli.

Also present will be Maharashtra Governor C.V. Rao, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, several union and state ministers, secretaries of various departments, diplomats, top industrialists and businessmen from across India and other stakeholders.

If it was her own initiative, I would have commended her for her efforts.
When Modiji never lived with her (as per news) and he never fills that particular column when filing election nomination papers, why it is mentioned under her picture, she as PM NM's wife.
This means Modi and BJP are using her with this gimmick to get popularity... prior to his visit to Mumbai.
    By Hook Or Crook...!!!

One thing we must note is that those who flock into cities searching livelihood, actually do have an abode, a permanent one, in their native place. What the cities must be prepared with, is a low cost housing for these people at a dedicated locality. That is because the city does require lower grade people to work, i.e. loaders, housemaids, drivers, cleaners, etc., one can't just say that they are unwelcome.

Them coming and settling into slums is a bad image as well as a breeding house of illiteracy, diseases, drug trade, prostitution, gambling and child trafficking. Therefore a clearing but its too late by then.

Protesting against their demolition is an consequential development but allowing them to settle at first place is wrong. There should be constant watch not to allow the first hut getting erected because once another and more add up to it, its rather impossible to move them out.

Even though I am a supporter of Shri Modiji I liked this gesture of Shrimathi Jasodaben to stand for the poor slumdwellers of Mumbai
Their houses should not be demolished during monsoon .But there are many real illegally built and occupied tenements in Mumbai just used to grab the land whose price is in Billions .

67 years of Independence. A grear achievement. Still 30% of our people living below poverty line. Politicians announce big big Manifestos, big agenda, big plans, Bullet trains, world class tunnels, but zero implementation. Most of the corrupt, greedy politicians enjoying Luxurious life on the cost of Tax Payer's money, with expensive Watches, High end Four Wheel Drives, plenty of Gold & Diamonds. Politicians of our Country miserably failed to uplift the poor, & to educate them. Our People r living in the dirty slums, & shanties. Politicians failed to provide alternative decent basic houses, replacing Huts & Slums. Some people r commenting that we r going to be super power soon!

P M Narendra Modi engaged with foreign trips and inviting worlwide diplomats for high profile 'Make In India ' . And his wife Jashodaben supporting people in Mumbai who affected of slum demolition activities. Surely Jashodaben's this active participation & humanity with poor is 100 times better than Modi's 1000 hopeless speeches to poor . Now she won more popularity than our PM.

Well, Ms. Jashodaben Modi is a very charismatic and distinguished looking lady: who knows, she will be coming in the headlines in India and around the world.

While the slums are demolished in Mumbai, and the Dharavi slum of Mumbai is affected seriously due to the beef-ban laws because 20% of the people close to 1 million population were engaged in the leather industry.

The tax-payer's Rs. 80 crore is lavishly spending to entertaining foreigners and the Indian business leaders only three heads of small countries are attending for the revolution of " make in India".

Even though Mr. Modi has deliberately ignored his wife, especially in the electoral affidavit, she will be shining in the bright light surprising India. Simply wait and watch.

This will not be like the Rs. 15 lakh/person of the black money lottery-not a metaphorical event as the 2nd in command Amith Shaw has clarified about the black money gift at the New Delhi election time where they got only three seats through the big political circus.

When PM Modi meets VVIPs, this agitation should remind him the plight of down trodden.
Some times we need to remind ourselves about people who are without food and shelter.
For some, few making slums may be a business.
But vast majority of them, will be deprived of everything that they have when their slums are demolished.
They are exposed to rain, cold of winter and burning sun in summer.
Their plight should pinch Filthy rich!

Dear Friend, please don't misunderstand me for telling the same thing. Since I have visited some of the worst slums in New Delhi, those memories of human suffering are tormenting my conscience the young and old are living in perpetual torment of hunger-lack of enough clothing- lacking basic medical care and having no safe place for a good night sleep which we can't even imagine.
