'India disappointed over US' decision to sell F16s to Pak'

New Delhi, Feb 13, (PTI) : India today expressed disappointment over US administration's decision to sell eight F16 fighter jets to Pakistan, saying it disagrees that such arms' transfers will help combat terrorism.

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar will be summoning US Ambassador Richard Verma to convey India's "displeasure".

"We are disappointed at the decision of the Obama Administration to notify the sale of F-16 aircrafts to Pakistan. We disagree with their rationale that such arms transfers help to combat terrorism.

"The record of the last many years in this regard speaks for itself. The US Ambassador will be summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs to convey our displeasure," the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

The Obama administration today notified the US Congress of its decision to sell eight F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan worth nearly USD 700 million, notwithstanding American lawmakers' demand for stopping the proposed sale.

The estimated cost of the sale is USD 699.4 million, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency – a wing of the Pentagon - said in a statement, adding that this proposed sale contributes to the US foreign policy objectives and national security goals by helping to improve the security of a strategic partner in South Asia.

Indian foreign policy is admired by whole world or we have to put our head to shame is to be pondered by every citizens. After BJP came to power, even our good neighbor Nepal, became our foe due to our typical 'Uncle Sam's' attitude.

Within India, the fringe groups, instead of building good relationship, started harassing all, who are not fit into their ideology. Valentine day celebration is the classic example. We Indians ourselves to be blamed for indirectly our so called well wisher USA, who now are ready to supply war air craft to Pakistan.

We have to go back building good relationship with Russia, who always stood to India during our most difficult times. Thanks to late Indira Gandhi,PM of India, for cementing this relationship to the higher level with USSR.

Russian war air space technology is far superior than USA which is proved recently at Syria.

Hope our BJP will realize their mistakes and let they bury their ego. Congress foreign policy & diplomacy is far superior. Always Nation should come first.

    Harold D'cunha,

When USA offered India F-16s, it ed Rafale from france. India ed rafale because it was told that rafale was superior. I dont know why India has now problem with Pakistan buying f-16.

''Russian war air space technology is far superior than USA which is proved recently at Syria.''

Yes russian air power working well over syria... but do you know why? Because there are no air defences. Against a properly deployed air defences any airforce would have difficult time. Even after more than 30 years in service F-15s, F-16s, and F-18s of US are quite formidable opponents for any russian built jets.

For USA "THE BUSINESS OF BUSINESS IS BUSINESS". However much India expresses her disappointment, they will escalate arms race in the region to pin our country down for their strategic gains. This lesson India ought to learn from the behaviour of successive US Governments till date. USA never took a strong stand on terrorism until Sept 11. Once it affected their soil then we heard a lot of noise on terrorism.

Sorry to say that this turn of events was quite an unpleasant response towards India and Mr. Modi's over-confident political dreams are now greatly challenged.
In reality, the former Indo-American closeness under the rule of Dr. ManMohan Singh has been greatly weakened under the present Government which has added religious fanaticism in the Government. Not only the U.S., other nations are watching this new trend of the nation.

India has to resume the flight in the flight path of democracy where secularism and pluralism must be at the forefront of the nation.

Why did Ambassador Richard Verma pay a visit to Sri. Advani a few
weeks back? Sri. Advani is not riding in the Gujarathi boat now, he and his oid pioneers of the BJP are now outcasts in the party. The Ambassador won't visit him without instruction from the State Department.

In Mumbai, the Ambassador spoke about the displeasure of the U.S. in the deliberate leg pulling of hundreds of NGSs including the Ford Foundation by the BJP, since most of these NGSs are religious based.

The second largest population of he world is Islam with 1.6 billion people and India has the second largest population of 177 million people. The beef-ban circus has caused far greater economic hardship for the minorities and in the business aspect, the Muslims were hit very hard. The U.S. has very long lasting political relationship with most of the Muslim countries, especially with the GCC countries.
Why did Dr. ManMohan Singh mention two days back about the beef issue for the first time?

Why the U.S. is giving F-16 to Pakistan? The U.S. is not fully comfortable with the BJP Government in their intolerant attitude towards the minorities and the shifting of the nation towards an autocratic theocracy. Though not openly telling that, the State Department is fully aware of what is going on in India with all the elaborate " make in India" slogans.

Successive president's of U.S always shake hands with India promising they care for us. Our government is living in a fool's paradise. They only care for their coffers to fill by selling defense equipment to any Tom Dick and Harry. The latest decision to sell fighter planes to Pakis is a wake up call to India. In my opinion India should rely on Israel for our defense needs. They are really dependable and trustworthy!

U.S. foreign policy vis-a-vis India and Pakistan is a finely calibrated strategy. It has not changed the balance of power for decades now and is unlikely to do so at a stage when the Chinese threat looms large over the region.
There is a yawning gap between the cup and the lip as far as delivery of F-16s to Pakistan goes. One also needs to remember the offer made to India a couple of days back about transfer of jet engine technology.
All in all, U.S. has been a fair policeman in the post WWII era. Off course, India does need to make the right sound bytes as MEA as done. But the issue need not raise our hackles.
