Rahul, Yechury, Raja join protest against police crackdown in JNU

New Delhi, Feb 13 (IANS) : Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI Secretary D. Raja on Saturday visited the Jawaharlal Nehru University here (JNU) to join the protests against the police crackdown on students accused of sedition.

About 2000 people, including students and teachers, gathered in front of the administration block of the JNU campus to condemn the arrest of the university's students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar and action against other students.

Demanding the release of Kumar, Yechury said he will raise the issue in parliament.

He said Delhi police must leave the campus.

"In solidarity with the united struggle in JNU and elsewhere! The Resistance Shall only Grow Stronger!," CPI-M said in a tweet.

Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken and CPI-ML senior leader Kavita Krishnan also joined the protest against the police crackdown.

The JNU student union has declared a "strike" in the university from Monday.

Countering the protests, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also staged a demonstration against students who allegedly had raised anti-India slogans in an event on February 9.

The ABVP members showed black flags to Rahul Gandhi and shouted slogans including "Rahul Gandhi go back".

To all those who have countered me for saying, ABVP is behind everything that's happening at JNU. Yesterday a new video (in todays newspaper's and in youtube) clearly shows ABVP activists in different attire shouting 'Pakistan Zindabad' slogans!. ABVP has said its doctored video!. If ABVP says theirs is doctored video, how come another video based on which many have been arrested is real!?. ABVP is a real menace to Indian education system!

Mr. Rahul Gandhi forgot that Afzal Guru was hanged during UPA rule. If there was any irregularities in the trial of Afzal (I am sure there were none), then UPA is responsible. I wonder why he is supporting the people who oppose the decision taken by his own government back in 2013? The irony of the situation is that, 8 security personnel were killed during the parliament attack in the process of protecting these "Politics" who are now supporting the people who oppose the death sentence to a terrorist who was involved in the attack. I am sure if any prominent politician from Congress of Left was killed in the attack, today they would have not supported the people who oppose the hanging of Afzal Guru.

Its tragedy to see indirectly supporting a terrorist.
Our judiciary has unanimously concluded his crime and he been punished for the same,Now no one is authorized to talk about this judgement,if any one talk's about this execution put them in jail for the charge of anti-national activity and contempt of court order.Be united against these kind of terror linked cases or else in future we may need to pay heavy price for same.

They were arrested because they were praising Afzal Guru on his death anniversary and shouting slogans against India (Afzal was a master mind in Parliament attack).Do you want them to be honored with Bharat Ratna instead of arrest ?..Now see dirty politics..Rahul Gandhi reached scene in no time to provoke students against Govt..The funniest part is that Congress Govt only gave green signal to hang Afzal Guru..!! There's nothing wrong in any institution trying to propagate their agenda. JNU at the moment has a student leadership which follows leftist and separatist agenda. Historically it has been hosting leftist agenda. So now if ABVP or NSUI is trying to push their way in, there should not be any issues with it.
