Bantwal, Feb 14: A loaded gas tanker overturned near BA College at Thumbay here on Sunday February 14, resulting in the death of the driver.

The tanker was plying from Mangaluru to Bengaluru.

At the turning near BA College, the tanker driver lost control, hit the divider and the vehicle overturned.

It was initially said that the accident had resulted in leakage of gas, creating panic and anxiety among the residents, however, official sources confirmed that there was no leakage. The diesel in the tanker spilled on the road, giving further cause for worry. Tragedy was averted as fire personnel from Bantwal, Mangaluru and Puttur rushed to the spot and took preventive measures.

The tanker driver, identified as Jayaprakash N (27) sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru, where he breathed his last.

Traffic was affected for sometime following the accident.

Traffic police and personnel of the Bantwal rural police station rushed to the spot.

Within minutes of the accident, the police informed the MRPL company and asked it send a team to control the gas leakage and remove the tanker immediately, however, the company representatives took over two hours to reach the spot, thus inviting the ire of Bantwal rural inspector Rakshith.

Moreover, as per rules, a gas tanker needs to have two drivers and a cleaner, but in this case, there was only one driver. The police who took note of this fact said that legal action would be taken against the company for violating rules.

The locals who gathered at the spot complained that unscientific construction of the national highway had resulted in the accident. It is learnt that just half an prior to this accident, two persons on a bike fell and injured themselves at the same spot.

Traffic police have registered a case.

many do not know MRPL is not selling gas, but only does refining. HPCL is the seller of gas. Just see the bullet fallen down, it is HP Gas.

just drama ... when ever such accident happens authorities question MRPL, think of safety etc etc. or else all the vehicles go breaking the rules... See its mentioned that tanker has single driver and no cleaner. when ever there is an accident it's found single driver. that means almost all the tankers are going with single driver. No use of questioning authorities now, when the accident happened. It's all drama. Luckily it ended up with out any blast or major disaster or else many would have lost their homes and lives... pity on ourselves to live such a cheap and valueless life.

This road has dangerous curves without any banking, which are very risky for such heavy tankers, thanks to NHAI!

Ban all these bullet tankers moving on the road. Wherever it moves create problems. The public should aware the danger of these kind of tankers piling on the roads with hazardous materials. Instead of transporting these kind of hazardous materials/gas on the road let the companies use railway transport. Dear friends take this issue to the court directly. Banging govt dept doors is no use, because this system is a big lobby.

This is result of "MAKE IN INDIA". Poor design of roads, poor quality of roads, poor quality of safety procedures, poor quality of tanker drivers, poor emergency procedures and yet feku says make in india

Economic progress of a country such as India with growing population and growing Education will obviously bring progress and prosperity that no one can fathom. India is one single most country where the growth of Education will bring growth in industry and economy that will bring new standards of life for people young and old, educated or otherwise. Additional taxation earned each year as a result of growing job creations will obviously bring new outlook in life and also our standard of living.

During our young days in Mangalore we had never seen a mammoth tanker such as this carrying LPG from our local Refinery that was once known as "Qaitha Koomhair" that belonged to my brother-in-law late Peter Pinto's family.

We have all the luxuries of life that are now available thru our own efforts and creativities. Having said all that, we must provide broader roads, bigger safety measures, and above all more trained and experienced safety Officers who know the instant measures to safeguard the safety and security of people. We have to train the entire village with the new methods of safety standards so that we know to protect each other in case of emergency. More ambulatory services and if needed even helicopter facilities for emergency is essential.

Safety standards of our drivers and our trucks should also be maintained at the highest level possible. We cannot afford to neglect our people who are the best backbone of our society.

Our media nowadays brings instant information of the events but we must always protect our people for which we all need training and coaching in every step of the way. We must barricade the disaster zones and avoid people standing by and posing the media photographers barefooted and innocent. We need fire fighting crew with uniform and safety devices. All of this is a
"must" if we want to see progress and prosperity in India.

"Namaskhaar" and God help our country on this Valentine Day.
