Railways to invest Rs 9,800 crore on Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train

Mumbai, Feb 14 (IANS) : Indian Railways announced on Sunday it will invest Rs.9,800 crore in the bullet train project along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor.

The train, that would run at speeds of 300-350 kmph, would be mostly funded by the Japan Investment Co-operation Agency (JICA) which would provide 81 percent of the investment as loan at an interest rate of 0.1 percent, Railway Board chairman A.K.Mittal told reporters here on the sidelines of the ongoing Make In India Week event.

The loan will be spread over 50 years and will have a moratorium of 15 years, he added.

Besides, 20 percent of the components will be sourced from Japan, but will be manufactured in India.

Mittal also said that the railway board has identified the Bandra-Kurla complex as the location for railway station in Mumbai.

"The station will be constructed three levels underground and hence will not hinder the financial centre that is being planned in the same area. In fact, a high-speed rail will improve the valuation of the land," he said.

That means India has to repay 98,000 plus 98,000 crore or more for this project considering the depreciation of Rupee by the end of this project..??
You simply inflated the cost of the project to 98,000 crore - 9,800 crore was better\tolerable figure.
One more "0" makes such a huge difference....
    I am really "Concerned" now.
Please do not add any more "0"s to the figure you mentioned.

Though foreign funds carry lowest rate of interest, while repayment, more currency have to shell out as Indian Rupee always been depreciating against major foreign currencies borrowed.
Foreign funding countries are shrewd enough to make their currency stronger than ours!
We have to pay out more money than we anticipated while borrowing.
Actual pay out works out more than average interest rate prevailing in India.

First let them finish Hubli-Kalghatgi-Ankola line where 55 km has been completed between Hubli & Kalghatgi and from Kalghatgi to Ankola new line to be laid which is only 120 km passing through Western Ghats.
Yesterday itself Supreme Court-Green Bench has cleared this Ankola-Kalgatgi project which was pending since 20 years. So if our Rly dept also works at the same speed like China Or Japan then this 120 km Rly line can be completed within just 2 years inspite of tough ghats of 80 km.

We think that the funding by foreign countries is a welcome step. Yes, it is, but considering the depreciation of the rupee, what amount we have to pay can not be any guess now. Rupee has depreciated 68 times (6800 %)in 68 years after independence and since Yen is a strong currency, how many times rupees required to repay the long 50 year period loan, no one thinks. Japan wants the funding, back in Yen.

    Santan M.
Why worry about depreciation of rupee at this juncture?
We have at least 15 years to pay and then we can beg again for another 15 years and so on, in case we are unable pay....!!!
By that time (by 2019) rupee will be 112 to a dollar).
It will be the headache of the next new Government...

I am not at all a Concerned1 like ModiGovt.

Since 81% of the investment is funded by JICA, there is every possibility this project to finish more or less in time after it commences.
The delay may occur from Indian Govt.\Ministers etc. for that 19% and their share in the booty (without which nothing will go smoothly), permissions, land acquisition etc.
I wish success to this project which will help more projects of this kind, to connect important cities and cut the transit time to half.
They did not mention here how much time it may take to complete this project.
Any project for the development of India will be supported\commended most probably by all.
After all the criticism of any Government is for them to function to benefit the Nation with time bound development.
