Beltangady: Man tied to tree, beaten to death by mob for stealing arecanuts

Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady

Beltangady, Feb 15: In a shocking incident, a man, said to be a troublemaker, was beaten to death by a mob for allegedly stealing arecanuts from a house here on Monday February 15. The incident took place at Totatthady here.

It is learnt that the locals caught hold of Peter (38), tied him to a tree and thrashed him, alleging that he had stolen a bag of arecanuts from a house.

Peter who was seriously injured passed away in a hospital later.

Sources said that a month back, Peter was jailed on charges of theft, and was released on bail just a week ago.

There was also complaint filed against him that he had added endosulfan into the water tank of a family last month.

On Monday evening, he was reportedly seen carrying a bag of arecanuts that he allegedly stole from a house. The locals caught hold of him and informed the police, but before the police could arrive, they tied him to a tree and thrashed him.

Sources also said that before he died in the hospital, he revealed the names of two persons among those who assaulted him.

Beltangady police have registered a case.

    Hi Ajith,

    Thanks.

As most readers on this forum have sympathised with Peter I'm hoping that Daijiworld would contact the family and set up a bank account with "An Appeal" like they did for several others in the past, and those who wish could contribute some money for his family, could do so. I'm sure his family is in much need.

I'm not justifying Peter's actions in anyway, shape or form but there is a possibility that the man and perhaps his family too were starving, and he robbed to buy them some food.

But here is the irony of the whole thing, what about those who robbed and continue to rob the country and/or the people through fraudulent business deals for crores of rupees, and are enjoying their money as well as having very high respectability in our society. So much so, no one even dares to point a finger at them!! This is the greatest travesty of justice, the poor are beaten to death while the rich are respected and are called great businessmen and/or leaders – what a sad state.

Congress and BJP governments are two sides of the same coin, both promised to bring back the billions of dollars stacked in overseas Swiss banks, but till date nothing has happened and nothing will happen. The Congress had the list and did not publish it because it contained the names of their supporters. The BJP’s election platform was “Bring us to power and we would publish the names on the list”. But when they came to power they found out the list contained the names of their staunchest supporters.

I have not seen that list, but I strongly feel that the people on the list are the same, they have supported and gained from both the Congress as well as the BJP, so which ever party is in power these names will never be known.

Hence, we should stop being yoyo’s by calling names to each other name because of their political affiliations, instead say a prayer for Peter and for all those killed in a similar way for the similar reason.

We have a similar situation. One of our relative is a big thief. He is roaming in the night and picks tender coconuts from the trees and even enters the houses. Because of some gooda support to him complaining to the police will not work. People must have fedup with Peter to thrash him so badly (not with the intension to kill him).

Fellow citizens, we have set a wrong example for the younger generations. Is that what we like our children to emulate? Does the killing of Peter stop theft in the region?

Earlier same person was made arrested , but what happened. some joker will come to get him bail. So, seeing the current system, it's the best solution.

    Thou shalt not Kill.
    Thou shalt not Steal.

We have two kinds of Laws.
I quote Mark 12:17Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. Unquote.

We have a Nation and we have a God.
WE HAVE TWO TYPES OF COMMANDMENTS.
    1)FROM GOD.
2)THE OTHER IS FROM NATION’S CONSTITUTION.

Nations have given freedom to all citizens.
However the given freedom is limited and commands us to perform within the jurisdiction of the constitution.

Hence the citizens have to adhere to commandments of the nation and the commandments of God.

Stealing and killing both comes under the laws of the nation and God which are grave crimes.

BEATING AND KILLING A PERSON IS A SEVERE VIOLATION OF BOTH THE LAWS OF THE GOVERNMENT AND GOD.

HENCE THOSE WHO HAVE BEATEN AND KILLED SHOULD BE ARRESTED AND FACE CHARGES.

it's ok looks like. one problem maker of the society eliminated. I read he was caught earlier also for the thefts but was released on bail. Actually we should catch hold of the culprit who got him bail and left free. Earlier a lot of fear was there while giving a bail to some one. Because of the same reason. if the culprit creates problem in future the person who gave him the bail will held responsible. now nothing... or else he wouldn't have seen this deadly end. any ways, nothing much to discuss... as he a problem maker for the society.

Thief was a big nuisance to the locality.
But killing mob culture is much bigger danger.
Once a person killing or beating to death, such habits never go.
Some land lords forcing him to work and live would have been right option.
South in the past resisted mob killing culture coming down from north but nowadays it's making gradual inroads.
Even rapes hardly used to take place in south before.

Daijiworld readers said, this incident shouldn't have happened, and I too join with them and say "This should not have happened".

But the fact remains here is that, what prompted people to deal in such a manner? What is the root cause. Honestly, if he was properly handled by our legal system, definitely, this incident could have been avoided. As it is clearly stated, he was jailed on theft case and recently been out on bail. Once he is out from the jail, he is back on his old habits / character, with the realization that, nothing will happen to him in the jail and he can walk freely.

I am certain that, non-one wanted to kill him. All this could have happened out of anger and frustration as their hard worked earning is being stolen...

Our law does not give justice to the honest people. For this guy its become habit of money.

But people don't have the right to kill anyone.

Punish the criminals but don't kill them. So that they don't repeat the crime after escaping due to the weakness o legal system of India.
