Legislator detained during protest march in Srinagar

Srinagar, Feb 17 (IANS): Independent legislator from Kashmir's Kupwara district, Engineer Rashid, was on Wednesday detained as he took out a march against the arrest of S.A.R. Geelani and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) protestors.

Rashid, who represents Langate constituency, took out a march with at least 200 supporters from his official Jawahar Nagar residence in the city.

The march was taken out by the MLA to show solidarity with those who protested at JNU on Afzal Guru's death anniversary on February 9.

The march was also intended against the arrest of former Delhi University teacher, S.A.R. Geelani by Delhi Police on Tuesday.

Police stopped the protestors near the Abdullah Bridge.

The MLA was detained and taken away in a police vehicle to Rajbagh police station. The protesters dispersed peacefully.
