Udupi, Feb 21: A weekend outing to St Mary's Island, Malpe by a group of friends turned tragic after one of them drowned while swimming.

The deceased has been identified as Prasad Babu (19), son of Ravi Kumar of Andhra Pradesh.

It is learnt that on Sunday February 21, a group of eight students including Prasad, all from NIT-K, Suratkal, visited St Mary's Island.

While seven of them sat on some spot at the Island, Prasad climbed over the rocks and jumped into the water for a swim. He was quickly washed away by the strong currents.

The lifeguards at the Island rushed to his rescue, but he had already been swept away to a distance. The lifeguards found him but by the time he was taken to hospital, he was dead.

Prasad was a second year mechanical engineering student of NIT-K, Suratkal. He was the only son to his parents.

Sources said that his family in Andhra Pradesh have been informed and they would be coming to Udupi soon.

Malpe police have registered a case.

On more drowning tragedy at St. Mary's Island. May the soul of Prasad Babu rest in eternal peace and deepest sympathies to his parents, loved ones and friends. I can understand how his parents must be feeling of losing their only child, a young man pursuing a career as Mechanical Engineer at NIT-K in Suratkal.

I cant understand even though all are aware that there are many cases of drowning incidents recently and why these children are not understanding and going to the same place to die?
Please someone has to stop this and take this issue seriously particularly school has to stop children going to beaches.
