Kundapur, Feb 23: Police have arrested Shivaram Madiwala, a worker of famous Sri Mookambika temple Kollur, for allegedly stealing ornaments belonging to the temple.

From the preliminary investigations it has been revealed that Shivaram is involved in the theft of ornaments amounting to more than Rs 20 lac. A team headed by DySP Manjunath is in charge of investigations. Sources said that some hitherto unknown interesting facts are emerging from the interrogation conducted at Kollur police station.

Shivaram Madiwala, though employed as only a counter staff, was looking after the management of cash, jewellery and ornaments which are donated to the temple by the devotees. Madiwala has been performing this duty since 2012. Kollur temple gets a lot of donations in gold form for years. When Madiwala applied for leave on February 14 and 15, he was told by the temple executive manager T R Uma to hand over the keys. But Madiwala took the keys with him and did not return at all to the temple. He had even taken cash collection of the last day with him.

When Uma phoned him to handover the cash and keys, Madiwala only sent Rs 4 lac with his wife the next day. The attempts by the temple management to reach Madiwala were unsuccessful. His family said that he was taking treatment, but did not specify the place. After waiting for many days, a police complaint was lodged. Police on Monday arrested Madiwala at his residence while there was an impression that he had fled from Kollur.

Police have obtained deposit and loan details of Madiwala from nearby banks. It is suspected that he had pledged ornaments in the past. This is the first scam concerning cash and ornaments in the famous temple. Police are yet to open the safe locker where the ornaments were kept before Madiwala left the place.

Byndoor MLA Gopal Bhandary has said that he was hurt by the developments taken place at Kollur temple and demanded a thorough investigation.

It is not yet known why Madiwala, being an ordinary worker of the temple, was given total responsibilities of cash and ornaments for five years. Some suspect that they are some other people who have played roles in the theft.

Former temple executive manager L S Maruti, who is presently in Kollur, speaking to the media said that handing over of charge to right people was demanded by him but there was no response to this by the temple management.

Some sources said before the arrest Madiwala had a secret meeting with some people at the temple lodge.

I am really surprised that Shivaram Madiwala, a counter staff of the famous Mookambica Temple in Kollur would do such a thing. Till the police investigation is over, nobody can come to any conclusion.

I don't see transparency in the daily transactions. Looks like there are no checks and balances even on the executive officer, trustees.

R.Lewis, mangalore, when one has loans, this is not the way to steal from temple regularly ,Gold and Money. He must have joined or applied to this Job with purposely.but he never thought there are skilled persons than him.what a shame.not a ideal to his children .who knows how much Gold he had hidden.Goddess must have showed the Person who was stealing continuously. She must have thought ,now is enough.Police have done a good Job.

There is some problem with the management. Everything is not right. The attitude of the people and service to the devotees has to be people friendly. Few years back I have noticed that cows are struggling to eat left over banana leaves from the bins next to temple (lunch) hall. I was disheartened to see the attitude of the management.

With no basic accountability, this type of siphoning off of donated money definitely be the tip of the iceberg, and it would not be possible w/o the connivance of others!!

People should think logically as to what happens to their donations given in the name of GODS!!

The above views are for all religious places where huge donations are received!!

High time that very high transparency put in place where such huge amounts of money are involved!!

    Respected Dr Kusuma,

With due respect to your profession, I would like to point out to you that it is not right on your part to curse the said accused person. May be this man had loans and was desperately in need of money and nobody was willing to help him.

Do you know madam in today's times, people want to show off and donate lavishly to Temples, Churches, Mosques etc. so that their names are highlighted and they get name & publicity. But when it comes to helping the needy nobody comes forward to do so.
God will not expect any lavish gifts mind you. On the contrary, God calls on us to help the poor and lowly. What God expects is a clean heart.
"If you have helped the least of your brethren, the needy, then my people you have helped me"... This is what God says.

So instead of cursing him let us all join our hands and pray that he may return the temple money. Also, may God help him solve all his financial problems.

P.S. This comment is from my heart based on today's pathetic situation in the world. It is certainly not to hurt anybody’s religious sentiments.

Rita i disagree with ur comment..
If you are in financial problem it doesn't mean u can rob money from the firm where u r working and fulfill ur commitment. If a politician is corrupted and robs money we all sue him just bcoz its not his money.Do we feel sympathy on this politician thinking that he might be in financial problem. same thing is with Madiwala.
