Rajya Sabha disrupted over Rohith Vemula's suicide

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS): Loud anti-government slogans causing an uproar over the death of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula disrupted the Rajya Sabha Wednesday -- the second day of the long budget session of the Indian parliament.

The upper house was adjourned five times after members assembled for the day at 11 a.m.

After earlier adjournments in the morning, Chairman Hamid Ansari adjourned the house till 2 in the afternoon when members refused to let the house function and wanted the government to discuss Vemula's alleged January 17 suicide.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which has 10 members in the house, blamed the central government for the scholar's suicide in Hyderabad University. They gathered at the chairman's podium, demanding the government suspend the Question Hour and debate the issue first.

They raised slogans, seeking justice for the family members of the dead student. They alleged that the government was anti-Dalit. "Rohith ke parivar ko, nyaay dou, nyaay dou", "Dalit virdohi sarkar, nahin chalegi, nahin chalegi", they shouted incessantly in front of the podium.

BSP leader Mayawati insisted that the government should respond first and debate the issue. "This is not the first time a Dalit student committed suicide," the BSP supremo said.

"Rohith Vemula was Ambedkar supporter. RSS did not like this, he was exploited," Mayawati said, referring to B.R. Ambedkar, the author of the Indian Constitution, who was a Dalit leader.

The upper house was forced into five adjournments till afternoon despite Ansari making a passionate appeal to slogan shouting members, requesting them that they should let the Question Hour proceed and raise the issue later in the day.

"Disruption of question hour is violation of privilege of individual members. Is the house going on that track," Ansari asked.

"The questions have been listed and they have to be answered."

The government as well as the chair pointed out that a debate on the Vemula death is listed for discussion later in the day.

But the protesting members didn't relent and continued with their slogan shouting near the chairman's podium.

The death of the Dalit student triggered widespread protests from opposition, who demanded action against central ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya, who were blamed for forcing Vemula to take his life.

Dear DW readers and Modi Haters,
Some people was blaming Mr. Modi day and night for his foreign tour.
Today i have 1 question for you all.
    1. Karnataka CM is in Dehli since yesturday to meet Mrs. Sonia Ghandi and Mr. Rahul Vincy.
    2. karnataka Home Minister Mr. Parameshwara is in Dehli Since tuesday to meet Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Mr. Rahul Vincy.

can any one please let me know who is paying their expenses?
Is there any use to people of Karnataka by this trip?
Did these 2 met any of Central ministers which may profit to karnataka?
Since Mr. Siddarammayya became CM, he & Mr. Param , almost 100 times he traveled to Dehli for unofficial issues.

is there any 1 penny benefit to state?
If they cant rule state with out high command permission, resign and sit in home, or make a house to high command in bangalore.
Why DW readers not asking this question?

is Our Moto just blame Mr. Modi even if his foreign tour will benefit to country and appreciate Mr. Siddu even if each tour becomes burden to state???

"The value of a man was reduced to his immediate identity and nearest possibility. To a vote. To a number. To a thing. Never was a man treated as a mind. As a glorious thing made up of star dust. In every field, in studies, in streets, in politics, and in dying and living."
These were the line is Rohith's suicide note.Useless leaders like Mayawathi have made his mark in history as a 'DALIT' who committed suicide and his credentials as good writer whom he wanted to be is pushed to space with his memories. Finally gain is only for caste politics which will get vote bank as he has quoted. What a waste of precious life for the parents.

Naach Na aave aangan tedha !!!

If Pappu wants to speak in Parliament no one can stop him. Why did he ask Jyotiraditya Scindia to speak ? instead Pappu could have utilized that slot. Again fooling his chelaas.

The fact is Pappu is inefficient and does not have guts to argue with Smriti Irani and win the debate.

That is why he his party men cowardly ran away from the Parliament in the name of protest.

In India….all reservations categories rocks even after their death too whereas many highly educated youths will look for outside job just because they don’t fall on that category. In our Dubai Office, few of our car owner colleagues put the label as “Reserved for Car No…….” so & so in the parking lot….. I just added the word in bracket as “OBC”. Believe me next day everybody removed that wording “Reserved”!!!!!

We should thank Dr. Ambedkar and our founding fathers for their foresight in creating Rajya Sabha, that is represented by all 29 states to control the activities of Lok Sabha. Otherwise every party that comes to power will try to make the country the den of their ideology. Even President has no right to dissolve the Rajya Sabha under the constitution.

I hear by request pappu to bring back afzal back to life. People like afzal and yakub r winning by distracting the focus of development even after their deaths. This must be a lesson for India now. Next time there's another afzal or Yakub don't even arrest them. Opposition has stooped to the level that they don't even know they're standing on a ledge on this issue and acting as if it's a strong ground for them to get back to power. This will be very costly for India.

Don't blame others for the blunders and failure of your own government. If anyone not capable to do their job, they have to quit immediately for the sake of nation instead of putting its citizens in trouble. $1=68 rupees and it will not take more time to reach 100. Since OPEC decided to halt the oil production, crude oil price will go up and in India petrol price will skyrocket. In result price for all the essential commodities will be increased. So how the common man people can survive??? But Govt is busy with only Beef ban, playing politics on students, dalits, intellectuals, scientists!!!God save India.
