Mangaluru, Feb 25: The special meeting of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) was chaired by Mayor Jacintha Vijaya Alfred at the Mangala auditorium of the corporation on Wednesday, February 24 amid protests and shouting of slogans by the opposition corporators.
Premananda Shetty of the opposition speaking on the occasion said that there should be an ordinary meeting of the corporation every month in order to discuss the problems of the common man and find solutions. "Why then there was no such meeting in February?" he asked.
Mayor Jacintha Alfred speaking on the occasion said that as the Commissioner had gone to Mandya on election duty, the agenda for the meeting could not be prepared. A special meeting scheduled in order to discuss important things in relation to development, she said.
The opposition corporator Thilakraj who was angry with the explanation by the Mayor asked who prepared the special agenda and threw the agenda copy.
Opposition corporators Madhukiran, Navinchandra and others tore the agenda copies, threw them down and protested in the well of the house. Other independent corporators also joined them.
Chief whip M Shashidar Hegde read the agenda in between commotion, slogans and protests and completed the special meeting.
Division of wards into three zones
As per the order received from the government the wards were divided into zones. Zone one has ward 1 to ward 11, Zone 2 has wards 12 to ward 19, wards 23 to 31, ward 41 to 47, ward 56, 57 and 60. Zone three have ward 20 to 22, ward 32 to 40, ward 48 to 55, 58, 59. The office for zone 1 will be in Suratkal. Zone 2 main office is at Lalbhag and Zone 3 main office will be at Shivabhag.
Place for dumping building debris
In order to prevent dumping thrash on roadsides, empty sites and such other places, the corporation has identified two acres of land in Kunjathabail for the purpose. The large ditch formed due to stone quarry is suitable for filling with building debris. Rs 5 per square meter will be charged for dumping the debris, said the Mayor.
Amrith Project work
Rs 160 crore have been approved for the corporation under the project. Rs 148 crore out of the amount will be utilized for renovation of old pipeline, Rs 10 crore for development of rain water sewage and Rs 2 crore have been set aside for the development of the park.
Deputy Mayor Purushotham Chitrapura, Commissioner Dr H N Gopalakrishna, local committee president Prakash B Salian, Deepak Poojary, Harinath and Keshava were present.
