Kundapur, Feb 25: Veteran Congress leader and Byndoor MLA K Gopal Poojary, has resigned from the post of president of Udupi district Congress committee, owning moral responsibility for the party's ignoble show in the district in zilla and taluk panchayat elections.
Poojary, treated as a sincere party activist, failed to stop the party's slide in all the three taluk panchayats in the district. The blow has been particularly severe in his home taluk panchayat, where his party was able to get only one seat.
Poojary left for Bengaluru on Tuesday for personally submitting his resignation to the party bosses there. As Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president, G Parameshwara, is in New Delhi, Poojary is left with no other alternative but to await the leader's return to Bengaluru, it is gathered. He will also submit a copy of his resignation to Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes, sources said.
Poojary, who also sent in his resignation by post, has desired the mantle to be handed over to young leaders of the party. Poojary has blamed BJP for spreading malaise against Congress and succeeding in their motto of misleading the people. However, the general perception in the circles of the district is that expulsion of Jayaprakash Hegde and thawing of relationship between BJP leadership and independent MLA, Halady Srinivas Shetty, had given leading edge to BJP in the region..
