Mangaluru, Feb 25: "The 'special meeting' held at MCC on Wednesday February 24, is legally invalid as per the Karnataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) act. Hence the decisions approved in the meeting should not be implemented. Without holding the general meeting and without providing the opportunity for discussion or agenda, this special meeting was organized. According to the KMC act, there is a provision to call the special meeting during emergency situations, and for special and significant issues. For this the mayor has to receive a requisition letter signed by the 1/3 corporation members." said Sudhir Shetty Kannur, opposition party leader in MCC.
Sudhir Shetty was speaking in a press meet held here on Thursday, February 25.
Sudhir said that approval was given in the meeting for works worth Rs 19 crore in the city. “Backdoor path been followed to serve the political interests violating the MCC proceedings," he added.
He also said that they will file a written complaint to MCC commissioner, state chief secretary of urban development and district-in-charge secretary regarding the approval of works and violation of MCC proceedings and demand to nullify the decision. "We will demand the dismissal of mayor and chief whips and cancellation of their memberships."
He also said "Mayor has no provision to give advance sanction for work above Rs 19 crore in a 'special meeting'. This is illegal and misuse of power. Hence we will file case with Lokayuktha. We will demand for divisional commissioner probe the issue."
