Railway blankets washed once in two months: Minister

New Delhi, Feb 26 (PTI): Ever wondered why the blankets provided by the Indian railways during train journey stink at times? It may be because these are washed only once every two months.

Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha told the Rajya Sabha during Question Hour today that while bedsheets, bed roll and pillow covers are washed every day, the blankets are washed every two months.

His reply came to questions raised by various members of the Upper House regarding the quality and hygiene of laundry and linen supplied by the Indian Railways on trains.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari quipped that the earlier system of passengers bringing their own linen and pillows for train journeys seems to be better.

He was supported by a Congress MP who asked the Minister if this would be allowed.

In response, Sinha said it was a "good advice" and the Railways will not have a problem if passengers want to adopt the earlier practice.

The Minister pointed out that while they have 41 mechanised laundries, plans are underway to increase their number by 25 more in the next two years so that these can serve about 85 percent of the passengers who use Railway linen and bed sheets.

He pointed out that in places which are not covered by the mechanised laundries, the job has been outsourced.

Some people use these blankets to cover the sleeping surface and last time when we travelled we found many blood stains in one of the blankets.
    Therefore, I suggest:
    1. Rly should wash blankets everyday.
    2. Or do not allow women, age between 10 and 50 in AC class.
    3. Or do not provide blankets to them.
    4. Or check the condition of women when they board AC class.
    5. Or when they alight the train, check for the stains in the blanket and charge them appropriately.
(stains found is true, but, other things, only fun intended)

I think bed sheets and pc washed but the blanket was stinking and I saw in my own eyes a person was sleeping next to me suffering from cold and whenever he sneezes the liquid comes out from his nose he was wiping to that blanket now u only imagine in two months time how many people have used that same blanket, and when the journey about to finish waiters are standing in a que for tips

Railway made profit and ran successfully only when Lalu was the railway ministry. thereafter it is in decline. Suresh Prabhu seems to be good but the RSS interference in his work too much. Most of railway contracts are been going to RSS contractors, sadly Prabhu has no control over it. He tries some patch work of railways. Unless appeasement of RSS stop there is no progress in railways.

    Very true.
I am shocked to read that Railways are giving us unwashed blankets! Very unhygienic.
If it is true, Swatch Bharat slogan is deceiving just like 15 lakh from black money.
    Surely a fund raising slogan.

bhuvan it's nice to read that at every sentence you have to mention Rahul's name, that goes to show that you cannot do without taking his name, by doing this you are giving free publicity to Rahul.

That is why I am a bit reluctant to use Indian railway when it comes to long travel because of its unhygienic conditions . But in India railways being the cheapest mode of transport most of the people don't have a choice.

Railway blankets may be washed once in six months that is the reason these blankets are stinking.

Rest of the two times washing (2+2) money is pocketed by the Railway employees.
