JNU row: Rahul, Kejriwal, Yechury among 9 booked for sedition

Hyderabad, Feb 28  (PTI): Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury are among nine persons who have been booked on sedition charges in connection with the JNU row, police said today.

An FIR has been registered against Rahul, Kejriwal, Yechury, Congress leaders Anand Sharma and Ajay Maken, CPI leader D Raja, JD(U) Spokesperson KC Tyagi, JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and JNU research scholar Umar Khalid on the order of a court here, based on a complaint filed by lawyer Janardhan Goud.

"It is a court-referred matter. Following the court's directive, a case under section 124A of the IPC (sedition) has been registered yesterday against nine persons, including Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Sitaram Yechury, JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and others," Saroornagar Police Station Inspector S Lingaiah said today.

The court has posted the matter for hearing on March 4.

In his petition, Goud said Rahul and other leaders, despite being aware that Delhi Police had registered a case against Kanhaiya on charge of sedition had visited JNU campus and knowingly supported them and hence it "amounted to sedition".

Kanhaiya and Khalid, who have earlier been arrested in Delhi on sedition charge, have also been booked here on the same charge.

Goud had filed a complaint in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate here on Thursday, seeking its direction to police for registration of a case against Kanhaiya and Khalid for allegedly raising anti-India and pro-Afzal Guru slogans on JNU campus and others.

In his petition, Goud said he has every right to question those who are indulging in "anti-national activities and also those who are encouraging anti-nationals in the name of solidarity for those who are facing criminal charges under section 124(A) of IPC."

Where is Indian democracy headed to?

With too many laws, too much confusion regarding interpretation of sections/sub-sections, and increasing/uncontrollable number of pending cases, God alone can save our democracy from going out of control.

Hope we are able to leave out many of the archaic, useless provisions of Indian laws and learn from other developed countries, to incorporate more meaningful/unambiguous/quickly enforceable laws, so that we are able to properly interpret them and enforce them quickly.

Failure to do so, would lead to anarchy/unrest in civil society and lead to crores of pending cases, which would eat up our country's precious time and resources, besides making a mockery of the entire judicial system.

Political class should be barred from entering/interfering into our educational institutions and ruining the lives/careers of crores of our young generation.
Political interference should be made strictly punishable, under new sections of Indian Penal Code.

as some one already highlighted... time has come. I always say why not supreme court or president interfere these anti national activities by Congress. they lost the power doesn't mean they can go the extreme of supporting terrorists and all these anti national activities. Let them be behind a bar for some time, relax and then have brainstorm sessions there discussing why they are thrown out of power by the whole nation, what's meant by patriotism, what's meant by Indian.... etc etc. At least 10 years down the line they can try to make a come back. if Indians let them to do ...

Why blame the Govt? "It is a court-referred matter. Following the court's directive, not the govt directive"

Mr. Rahul Gandhi & Mr. Kejriwal had no business to support these so called Anti- Nationals. Calling anti national slogans is not freedom of speech, but sedition, Mr. Kejriwal is more interested in playing politics than ruling Delhi & fulfilling the promises he pledged to the voters, including that he would expose Sheila Dixit & Co.

All anti nationals including those who shout anti Indian & pro Pakistan slogans & instigating terrorism in J&K, also those Sri Ram sena workers who hoisted Pakistani flag in Hubli couple of years ago. Take action on these thugs.

Those who disrespect the country & constitution should be booked under sedition law & punished with no parole.

NDA should not be hypocrite, and should the idea of supporting or forming the govt in J&K with PDP, as these PDP members support these anti nationals.

PM Mr. Modi should act against his own party MP's & leaders who speak against other religion & spread their party ideologies & try to impose on them. We don't want sweet talk or Mann Ki Baat, we want sensible baat & action ki baat. PM Mr. Modi you are now ruling whole nation, not just Gujarat. Get your act together.

    Jai Hind.

Mr Goud is following his right constitutionally. Mr. Goud, I laud your spirit to take recourse to the law. This sets a platform for rightful debate about the anti-sedition law.

The citizens of India will get more clarity on this controversy.

Kanhaiya is belongs to that tribes and He was promoting "mahisasura" in JNU campus. But ABVP could not tolerate and instead directly targeting Kanhaiya on this issue indirectly targeting JNU saying Anti-national. Its clear if you are anti-Hindu then anti-national

This is a Court directive based on a complaint filed by a lawyer Mr. Goud. Nobody can blame the action of the judiciary. Let them face the legal proceedings and defend themselves before the court of law. Good that it is Court issued order to book FIR. Still all these vote bank politicians will shut foul accusing PM office vendetaa & he has told the judge to do this. But this is a step to create public awareness and for warning such politicians to be more circumspect in future.
