Udupi: Bullet Tanker Overturns on Pangala Bridge Charring Two to Death

Udupi, Sep 22: Two persons were charred to death near Pangala Bridge when LPG transporting tanker overturned in the small hours of Saturday September 22.

The deceased are the driver and cleaner of the ill-fated tanker. The tanker went off the road and overturned Pangala Bridge as the driver lost control over the vehicle. Owing to leakage in diesel tank, tanker immediately caught fire and gutted.

Even LPG in the tanker leaked out and even the trees near the road caught fire and charred to ashes. The cleaner of the tanker tried to escape from the tanker by jumping outside. But he could not go far as huge flames of fire engulfed him.

However, the deceased have not yet been identified. Fire fighters from Udupi and Kaup struggled for 4 hours to bring the fire into control.

    This bridge has become a very dangerous accident spot. It is really surprising our authorities did not wake up to realise the hazard, and do some thing to avoid such accidents, since thousands of vehicles are passing this bridge every day.

    An other serious hazard involved in these bullet tank is they are carrying hydrocarbon material which is highly flammable. To make the thing worst, these tankers are pressurised to keep them in liquid state. The fire such as this one will lead to expand the hydrocarbon due to extensive heat, there is always a chance to explode and cause more damage.

    People must keep themselves away from the accident site in such cases. Let only trained people handle the emergency! One should call the fire brigade and if possible the company to which the material belongs, because they are the right people to handle this type of emergencies!

    Very educative.  I have never seen a LPG tanker catching fire in my number of years of working life in oil refineries. like IOC/MRPL
