Bangalore, Sep 22: Condemning Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi's remarks on the authenticity of existence of Rama, Seer of Udupi Pejawar Mutt Vishwesh Teerth Swamiji on Friday challenged the former to come for an open debate over Rama and Ramayana.
Swamiji, who is currently in Chennai to observe Chaturmasya, told this paper over telephone that he would invite Karunanidhi for a debate on a common platform over latter's remarks against Rama. “Let him come for a debate and I would prove him wrong,” he said.
Giving 30 days' time for Karunanidhi to accept his challenge, Swamiji said that he would assume that the Tamil Nadu chief minister had no courage to debate over Ramayana if he failed to respond to his challenge.
Alleging Karunanidhi of misleading the people on Ramayana, Swamiji said that neither Valmiki Ramayana nor Tulsi Ramayana described Rama as drunkard as quoted by Karunanidhi. A detailed debate would clear the air, he added.
He said that he had no personal enmity with the chief minister but he was hurt by the remarks made by Karunanidhi.
“Being a Chief Minister of a state, he should not talk like that. The Chief Minister and Ministers should respect the sentiments of the people in a democratic setup. If he were not a Chief Minister, he was free to speak anything. But being a Chief Minister, he should restrain himself as he represents the people,” Swamiji said.
