Crimes against women due to lack of good values: Raveena Tandon

Mumbai, Mar 10 (IANS) : Actress Raveena Tandon says that it is important to teach children good values as lack of them leads to crime against women.

"In current circumstances when domestic violence against women is increasing in our society, we should find out its root cause. The law must be strong for those who commit crimes," she said.

"Secondly, women should teach good values to their children. Our children should learn how to respect women," said Raveena, who was at the Hinduja hospital here along with veteran actress Moushumi Chatterjee to celebrate Women's Day.

Having adopted two girls even before she got married, Raveena has been a trendsetting mother.

Crimes against women have been on the rise in the country. Some cases like the Nirbhaya gang rape in 2012 led to intense discussions on formulating a stronger law to prevent such crimes.

One of the offenders in the case was a minor. A new law was passed in the Rajya Sabha last year lowering the age of offenders from 18 to 16 so that they can be tried in court for crimes like rapes.

"Young generation should spend more time on sports and other activities. If youth is unfocused, violence against women will rise. While women are worshiped as goddesses in our country, they are also being violated at homes. It is a symptom of mental sickness," said veteran actress Moushumi Chatterjee.

There is also the need for women in our country to teach their children to respect others, so that they grow up with good values," added Chatterjee, who recently played a lively, honest and compassionate aunt in 'Piku'.

What we learn at home - we reap the good bad or the ugly.

The Rape capital of the world - where does it exist? Delhi and its suburbs.

There is a clash of cultures of villages to city life that collide like tectonic plates. It is very common in villages( in those part of the country) where domestic violence is justified as a right to control the wife.

When the youth from these villages travel to cities - when they see out of bound women ( not wearing Mangala suthra, Sindhoor etc)they associate that with the righteous behavior of their village elders, that is teach them a lesson thus moral justification.

Suburbs where overnight real estate boom has left the landowners with overnight richness does not mean they are rid of their archaic thinking.

I do not think it is right to blame the Bollywood. What Bollywood produces some time is reflection of the society we are in.

Yes, the public may want more than that. But you cant impose your views on others. you cant say to others what others must watch. People generally want to decide on their own.

Also, advise Bollyhood and other reality shows organizers how the glamour girls need to protect their modesty. It has become common now a days presenting the shows with too much exposure/revealing in the name of entertainment. Even we can beat Western culture in that sense.

Now a days you glorify crime against women and exaggerate the stats , you get TRPs and limelight . Jobless actresses upon losing to younger lot , need media attention . Facts are exactly otherwise , Almost 90 percent cases of domestic violence are false and filed to settle score with husband / in laws , forcing a fat alimony by Gold digger women . Its prone to misuse because as DV act is not gender neutral and if wife abuses husband , its LEGAL !! . Majority of homeless and shelterless are men and there is no single NGO to support them , government funding ( 75000 crore) reserved for women & children only , and this comes from men's pocket as they r tax payers . Not a single penny is spent for men and their rights ( empowerment ) .

Women rights ministry is acting against child rights by supporting amended juvenile justice act , ie even if woman abuses child , minor boy/ girl becomes rapist . This pseudo appraisal of ONLY WOMEN issues is costing society and spreading misandry . Just watch the video which went viral on women's day a bunch of drunkard women abusing men on metro . They r helpless because , if they fight back they will b booked for molestation because law assumes only women as victims

Raveena Tandon is right. First lesson starts at home, on mother's lap. If a child is taught to respect all, irrespective of gender, there will be no competition with the opposite gender but a feeling of respect.

There are several instances where sons are pampered with abundant freedom and money while daughters are confined or cut short in facilities. This is the primary mistake our society does. When its a herculean task to even talk to a female, boys go for forceful methods to achieve what they desire.

If the father abuses their mother in front of children, the children grow up learning that its a custom to insult and disgrace females.

For all rapes and abuses, foremost responsible are the parents. Next is the medium of TV, Films, Telephone, Internet so on. However, if a youth knows his/her limit, there will always be conscience of self control against crimes.

    Lydia,

I disagree with you when you say that for most rapes and abuses parents are responsible. How can they be responsible. I dont think any parents will sit their children down and would give them a lecture about respecting women. They will only know when their children as committed some crime, until then they will be considered as angels . Most of the parents would still defend their children in spite of them committing the crime (because of them inheriting selfish gene).

Secondly, I think blaming TV, films, telephone and internet is unfair. In that case you must blame all the rest of the violence (because it is generally considered ok to view gruesome murder than a sex scene) on them and not only violence against women. violence against women existed even before those media existed.

And the other thing is that i have noticed that no one seems to put blame on alcohol, in spite many who commit the crime are under its influence. Eg: The persons who were involved in delhi gang rape were all under the influence of alcohol, they robbed one person of his money, later they raped the girl, who got on that bus later. Now many of you will skip the whole alcohol part and straight away blame access of porn for the crime. what i see is alcohol opportunism misogynist upbringing.

Lydia Madam, well I dont agree in general with you,"on when there is a domestic violence like father abuses mother children learn from that". According to me in such cases children are more supportive to mother. It can be a good or bad event. In modern days some cases it may turn against fathers even though he is right.

Your theory may be applicable in uneducated families. Specially from North India.

    Zeitgeist & Subhash Rao,

To little children, you don't explain directly RAPE but smaller abuses. Like pinching a girl, lifting her skirt are kind of things that shame the little minds. When you educate a smaller boy about how the victim suffers/cries and feels shamed, the offender understands his mistake and stops from repeating as well as developing into bigger adventures. At the same time, if you boost his guts, supporting that 'HE IS A BOY' to do such things and instead reprimand the girl for coming in reach of the boy, the girl will get into a shell and grow up in fear and insecurity.

At the same time, you give whatever the son asks for, he goes and buys things he requires - could be Hi-Fi or drugs/alcohol. Whom do you blame ? The manufacturers ? Eh ?

There always is a way to tame growing up children, by enticing them to earn their goodies. I have cultivated a habit in my little ones by getting them to clean the house/toilets or cook smaller items (tea, veg. upkari, scraping coconuts) for which they get an incentive which they keep account of and get paid at the end of the month. When we go shopping, they get very calculative based on funds availability and buy just that. Upon coming home, they honestly open their pouch and pay their father. And, please note, he TAKES it, not excuses !

Well, a bonus comes for a best result, that he/she gets the pair of shoes/cosmetic by the father paying for it.

Its not in my family alone - I have examples in boys helping collecting coconuts, shell them and loading for sale. Or, collecting betel nuts, helping spread them for drying, collecting in the evenings and even shelling them. All assisted by the school-college going children. The kids race home after school/college because there is work to do that pays them. Pay it surely does - a percentage upon same of the produce.

Well, I'm sure I have said enough. I don't want to bore you guys, and DW world limit is a hurdle too !

There are several methods children are handled, you may be having yours own because a case differs from the other.
