Not a good time to go ahead with commercial mining: Official

Kolkata, Mar 10 (IANS): Given the situation of temporary surplus of coal, this is not the most appropriate time to go ahead for commercial mining, Coal Secretary Anil Swarup said here on Wednesday.

"We believe it is not the most appropriate time to go ahead for commercial mining. Necessary groundwork has been done, we will take a look at the market situation," said Swarup when asked whether the government would allow private sector into commercial mining.

He was speaking on the sidelines of an interactive session with Coal Consumers'Association of India.

"Our apprehension emulates from the last round of auction in which we did not get too many responses. Our understanding is that it was due to improved condition of coal supply.

"Due to elections we have to wait the process of seeking applications for the blocks," Swarup said.
