Mangalore, Sep 26: The Vijaya Rural Development Foundation (VRDF) vice president Premnath Alva, inaugurated a regional-level workshop on Vermi Composting which was organized by the Vermitechnology Association of St Aloysius College Department of Zoology, here on Tuesday September 25.

Alva declared at the workshop “Vermitechnology is a blessing for the soil”, considering the fact that there is weakening in the quality of soil caused by regular use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, to increase agricultural yield during the green revolution.

According to college rector Fr Francis Serrao, nothing can be considered as a waste, as we can draw something from what we generally consider as waste or dirt. He opined that science need not be just preserved the privileged class, but it has to touch our daily life. The workshop he stated shows us how to utilize science to recycle waste matters.

The rector Serrao later even released ‘Vermibin,’ which is newly developed by the research team of the college.

In his presidential address, principal Fr Swebert D’Silva remarked that a research or a study becomes meaningful only if helps the people. The ‘Veribin’ is helpful in disposing off the waste material at the same time creating manure with the help of earthworms.

Dr S Hareesh Joshi, HoD of Zoology, Organising Committee secretary Sudeep Ghate and others were present on the occasion.
