India proved democracy, rapid economic growth can co-exist: PM Modi

New Delhi, Mar 12 (NDTV): India has dispelled the myth that democracy and rapid economic growth cannot co-exist, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today while addressing the 'Advancing Asia' conference in New Delhi.

Speaking at the three-day conference, he also said that "India has shown that a large and diverse country can be managed in a way that can promote economic growth and maintain social stability."

The conference has been organized by the government of India and the International Monetary Fund.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, who was also a keynote speaker at the conference, had earlier said that "with the promise of more reforms, India's stars are shining bright."

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is expected to address the conference that is also being attended by RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan and Gates Foundation's Melinda Gates.

"India will pursue economic reforms agenda"

New Delhi, Mar 12 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said even as India is now the fastest growing economy and ranks at the top in terms of favoured investment destination, reforms will continue to be pursued in the right earnest.

"My agenda for reform to transform is yet to be finished," the prime minister told the "Advancing Asia" summit here co-hosted here by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the government of India. "Entrepreneurship is also booming, following a series of steps we have taken."

With IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde on the dias, Modi said reform of global institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF has to be an on-going process. But even now they don't reflect the global economics realities.

"I am very happy that the IMF has decided to finalise the next round of quota changes by October 2017," he said, a day after his government tabled a supplementary demand of grant of Rs.69,575 crore in parliament for increasing India's quota in IMF with higher voting rights.

Modi said many knowledgeable people have said that the 21st century is and shall remain the Asian Century, where India has a special place. "We are a ray of hope for global economic recovery," he said.

"India has also dispelled the myth that democracy and rapid economic growth cannot go together," Modi said, adding his country has also shown the world that a large, diverse country like India can be managed in a way that can promote economic growth and maintain social stability.

The prime minister said along with focus on macro economic stability, removing corruption and also interference in decisions of banks and regulators, his government is also helping the farm sector but not based on giving hand-outs.

"We aim to double farmer incomes," he said, adding: "We have increased investment in the rural and agriculture sector, because that is where a majority of India still lives."

What do U mean by commenting Mr. Modi will make India more beautiful than London. During his period as PM how much poverty has been eradicated, how many beggars have been removed from every street corners & most importantly how many huts have been converted as Five Star hotels. I will save your comment to evaluate the situation after Mr. Modi completes his first term.

Half a century back, for the foreign news papers, they showed the snake charmers of India and other side of poverty. Since India-American relations were getting better after Sri. Rajeev Gandhi came into power, they began to show some side of the affluence of India.

Recently, one leading news media of the U.S. had an elaborate article about Mumbai showing the 10 story garbage, bone and skin human beings wandering through the heap of garbage barefooted to pick up something to sell, and the holy cow eating the trash. Now the only hope for India is the Modiji avatar to make India as a shining and poverty-free country.

Alfria, Mumbai: Now the BJP politicians are questioning the Government for enacting a beef-ban in Maharastra. Due to the dry weather, the cattle fodder situation is getting deplorable. The farmers can't sell their old cattle and buy new one. If the news media will report the suicide rate, they will be taken to jail for anti-national reporting.

Now both Maharastra and Haryana medical industry would be faced with two challenges. The CCU units will be closing very fast due to the high decline in heart attacks and the cardiologists will have to go to general practice.

This new health report from India must be submitted by the Minister of Health (who is that?) at the UN and all the World Health Organizations. What a great contribution from India like the great contribution of Greece Empire in philosophy?

Nobody can change mother.., mother is a mother for everyone.., but the point Mr Simon trying to explain is when mother assumes the role of a mother-in-law.

It is a make-in-hindustan phenomena. Every husband who marry Hindustani girl not only know this fact but also experience.

A negative in exports for months together, a negative in PMI for months together, a negative in agriculture for months together and miraculously a 7.3% growth shown in the GDP with an altered base, which nobody has been able to explain or believe. Raj,

Mr. Modi is talking about Democracy and Economic Growth. Do you know the difference between democracy and communal harmony/unrest ? Democracy is when you are free to do things which is not possible in dictatorship. Therefore, when democracy is in reference, do not bring religion along.

As for repaid economic growth, I am not good at economics but just above your comment, BABA has explained it fittingly. I am copy-pasting it here :

"A negative in exports for months together, a negative in PMI for months together, a negative in agriculture for months together and miraculously a 7.3% growth shown in the GDP with an altered base, which nobody has been able to explain or believe. Talking of reviving the world economy by a country that is one fifth of China in GDP and just below Little Italy, is, to say the least, ridiculous"

Your undisputed acceptance of everything/anything Modi says is apparent, but talking about bananas while the reference is about mangoes shows your stupidity, not hero-worship.
