AOL won't pay fine but support restoration of Yamuna floodplains: Sri Sri

New Delhi, Mar 12 (PTI): Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, whose cultural event on the floodplains of Yamuna is mired in controversy over violation of green norms, today once again sounded defiant, saying he will not pay any fine or penalty.

But, he said, he would wholeheartedly support the "developmement and restoration" of the venue where the event is being held.

Addressing the event on the second day, Ravi Shankar said the amount the National Green Tribunal had asked the AOL to pay was for restoration and not as a penalty.

"All through, I have lived a spotless life. I have never been late to school. I have never paid fine, even of a single paisa. So, we said we will not pay any fine. But then I was told that this is not a fine or penalty. It was wrongly reported in newspapers.

"They said it was for the development here. We said, if this is for development and restoration, then we will whole-heartedly support this and put everything into this," Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said.

The NGT had on Wednesday allowed Art of Living Foundation to hold the festival but asked it to pay Rs 5 crore as environmental compensation for ecological damage.

However, yesterday the relief to the AOL Foundation came with a stinker from the green panel which took strong exception to Ravi Shankar's remarks about refusal to pay Rs 5 crore and instead saying he would prefer to go to jail.

"When a man of his stature makes such statements, it hits the very rule of law. If anybody hurts the image of the tribunal, he will be taken to rule of law. Don't treat tribunal as subject to your controversy with regard to the event," a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Swatanter Kumar said, while directing AOL to pay Rs 25 lakh immediately after the organisation expressed difficulty in arranging Rs 5 crore in such a short period.

A spokesman for AOL Foundation today said the organisation has already deposited Rs 25 lakh.

The event got embroiled in a controversy after environmentalists alleged that its preparations have damaged the ecology of Yamuna floodplains and demanded that the event be cancelled.

“It’s actually a land-grab in the name of a festival”: An interview with Vimlendu Jha

On 9 March 2016, the National Green Tribunal (NGT), a special tribunal conceived in 2010 to handle cases pertaining to environmental issues, ordered the Art of Living (AOL) foundation—headed by the spiritual leader Ravi Shankar—to pay an initial environmental compensation of five crores for the damages inflicted to the Yamuna river by the World Culture Festival (WCF), an event organised by the AOL. The AOL asked for more time. The NGT relented, asking the foundation to pay 25 lakhs initially and the remainder over three weeks. The preparations for the WCF—held from 11-13 March attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi—on the banks of the river had been wrecking havoc upon the river’s ecosystem.

On 10 March 2016, Ishan Marvel, a web reporter at The Caravan, spoke to Vimlendu Jha, the founder of Swechha, a Delhi-based organisation that has been working on issues related to the environment, education and social enterprises since its inception in 2000. Jha revealed how the AOL and Ravi Shankar have been flouting the NGT orders and making false claims in the press, all the while, ruining the Yamuna with the government’s support."

In general and not pointing at Sri Ravishankar If any one doesn’t practice what he preaches then art of LIVING will converge into art of LYING (like Mr. Modi lying about depositing 15 lakhs to each Indian from Black money) then he has no other way left but to demonstrate the art of LEAVING (like Mr. Mallya).

All this environmental impact is bakwas. However Sri Sri is not above the court and he must respect the same. He should also donate some money to Army fund.
"I am right" stance does not go well with conquering "aham' - which he should know better.

Disrespect to the decision of the NGT, by taking a defying stand not to pay the fine/penalty/restoration fee itself is contrary to claim that he lead all through the years a spotless life..,
The intention to join the restoration task is a clear land grabbing strategy which was since beginning many were talking, discussed & as reported in the media...,

Anyone not abiding the law of the land can't claim himself leading a spot less life.

That is welcome news. But I am surprised, why the topic changes every time. This is like fooling the innocent people. There is many issues in this fine paying and the restoration. Somebody should clarify and let the public know.
