British citizenship row: Rahul Gandhi issued notice by Parliament’s ethics committee

New Delhi, Mar 14 (Indian Express) : Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi was on Monday served a show-cause notice by the Ethics committee of Parliament asking whether he had declared himself as a British citizen during his stay in the United Kingdom.

“A showcause notice has been issued seeking his (Rahul’s) response on why he declared himself British citizen in documents related to a UK company,” Parliament’s ethics committee member Arjun Ram Meghwal told news agency

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament House, Rahul was brief in his reaction: “We’ll deal with that.”

In January, BJP’s Delhi MP Maheish Girri wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan asking tha the Ethics Committee of Parliament investigate the matter on priority and without prejudice because “no person is above Constitution”.

Girri had complained to Mahajan against Rahul’s alleged “dual citizenship”.

“Many contradictory facts against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi have come up. There is a big mystery over his citizenship now. If he is a citizen of two countries, then it’s a matter of serious concern,” Girri had said in a statement issued, adding that it was “very important to clear the speculations hovering” over him.

Accusing Rahul of declaring himself a British citizen to float a firm in the UK, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding that the Congress MP be stripped of his Indian citizenship as well as his parliamentary membership. The Congress has dismissed Swamy’s charge.

The ethics committee is headed by veteran BJP leader LK Advani.

What a waste of time by the elected representatives of the nation!

A mere mention on a document that an individual is a citizen does not make that person a citizen of a country.

To get citizenship of a country is a long drawn out process, involving the Government of that country and the person concerned. It could take years.

It looks like the Central Government is made up of individuals who still think they are in the opposition.

The country is getting increasingly tired of this Government as no progress is seen at the ground level.

And they serve notice on something completely irrelevant.

That “mere mention in the document” is evidence enough to prove his credibility, his integrity, his loyalty to the nation, his honesty, his sincerity, etc. He is not an ordinary citizen, he is a public figure, an MP, he has certain responsibilities and obligations towards the nation. A common man providing false information or secretly acquiring citizenship of another country, although a serious offence, is not a big issue in the eyes of the public. Whereas a representative of the people in parliament involving in such offences is indeed a serious matter for which he is obliged to answer to the nation.

    read the statement properly.
it clearly says point is whether he declared or not but why he declared.
its sure rahul declared himself as british.
If its proven he has UK nationality then he will not be MP or any portfolio or never become Indian CM.
even the case of JNU support will turn into antinational by foreigners involvement in indias internal issue.

Those who have fake degrees, & fake photo shopped claims of fake development are bent on exposing others!
These are nothing but diversionary tactics used on the eve of Parliament session to put the opposition on back foot with silly cases & some times letting out some leaked documents which have no significance.
This tactic used by present government will put to shame Ataljees governance which was always taking opposition on board so that some lobbies who wanted to scuttle his development bills within his own party.
This government is bound to fail if it takes this stand of arrogance & attack as best option while people suffer because of this incompetency of governance at center.

"Speaking to reporters outside Parliament House, Rahul was brief in his reaction: “We’ll deal with that.”

Good that Rahul Gandhi has not denied nor accepted the UK Citizenship but Bhakts will surely be skeptical. Its best to wait until he responds, than speculating on your own lines. He is a law abiding citizen, not a scamster nor an absconder.

First we must find out whether the 'humanity based benefactor' or the Rajya Sabha Member (BJP) absconded under the benevolence of BJP have gained UK citizenship entitling them to continue their stay in UK despite of having warrant issued against them.

Lydia Madam, Let me clarify. If Rahul Khandi is or was a British citizen in the past, he would have been ineligible to stand for any public office for a start. Even if he is an Overseas Citizen of India, he is barred from holding any public office. That means, if he did say he was a British citizen, when in reality he was not, then he is LYING. But if he was a British citizen or an OCI, his election to the Loksabha is null & void & he is guilty of fraud. Rahul Khandi should come forward, write back and explain and close this issue, rather than confronting and calling it a 'vendetta'. The more you dodge the more guilty you become. But at the same time, its bad news for BJP, without Pappu in the opposition its very tough for BJP or Modi to win.
