JNU row: Kanhaiya, 4 others should be rusticated, recommends top university panel

NEW DELHI, Mar 14 (PTI) : A high-level committee of JNU has recommended rustication of Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and two other students for their alleged role in a controversial event last month at which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised.

Sources, however, said a decision on the recommendation by the panel will be taken by vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar and Chief Proctor A Dimri after a thorough scrutiny of the suggestions.

A meeting of the university's top brass chaired by the vice-chancellor today discussed the report following which the varsity issued show-cause notice to 21 students including Kanhaiya and Umar, who were found guilty of having violated university rules and discipline norms.

The committee was formed on February 10 to probe the event organised to protest hanging of Afzal Guru, the Parliament attack convict.
Kanhaiya, Umar and Anirban were arrested on charges of sedition in connection with the programme. Kanhaiya was released on bail from Tihar on March 3 while Umar and Anirban are still in judicial custody.

"The high-level committee has recommended rustication of five students after its investigation over a month's time. However, the final call in this regard will be taken by the Vice Chancellor and Proctor's office," sources told PTI.

The university had on March 11 revoked the academic suspension of eight students including Kanhaiya after completion of the probe by the five-member panel. It was decided to keep them under suspension from academic activities till the inquiry was over. However, they were allowed to stay in the hostels.

The panel, which was granted three extensions before it finally submitted its report, also faced difficulties in the probe as students refused to depose before it demanding that the enquiry be constituted afresh.

The varsity, however, turned down the demand and maintained that the students will be given three chances to appear before the disciplinary committee and, if they fail to do so, the committee will finalise its recommendations on the basis of evidence available, eyewitness accounts, students' deposition, if any, and other material available on hand.

actually that was the best time for a non religious constitution, as a new independent country, it was comparatively easy to implement anything. There are whole lot of write up on why Dr Ambedakr chose Buddhism. He did study other prominent religions and came to conclusion that, Buddhism suits him. So, Indian secular and liberals trying to take his name to validate their argument is kind of oxymoron

How come so many kashmiri separatists get into the event along with these students. They are not students, but people who are going to become naxalites. Kick them out of JNU / Country!

You are right Varun. Dr. Ambedkar is a Dalit who, for unbearable discrimination from upper caste lords, lead a sanskritization of thousands of Mahar community members in Maharashtra into Buddhism.

Dr. Ambedkar is one of the key personalities involved in drafting our constitution. Now you will not wonder by Indian constitution was made into a SOVEREIGN, SOCIALIST, SECULAR, DEMOCRATIC, REPUBLIC one, not a religion specific nor an atheism based.

Atheism would not have suited at that time when two prominent religions were pulling the force towards them. Secularism is the best thing to have happened to independent India with religious pluralism.

Dr. Ambedkar chose Buddhism because it welcomed people without racial discrimination.

    Bhuvan,

The students did not barge into JNU premises and conduct the program but they held it very much with permission from the management. The government, upon learning about any anti-national activities (from ABVP source), should have dealt with the university, not with students directly. You should note that all through the arrest and detention, the university was supporting the accused. Why ?

To strengthen the hooliganism of the government, the video was morphed as an evidence of students' anti-national slogan. Who is bigger culprit here ? The University or the ABVP's big brother BJP (Government) ? If they did not morph the video, did they have any other proof ? NONE !

The university is taking corrective measures for its own carelessness that lead to all the aftermath mess. JNU administration will also get its turn to answer for its irresponsibility, you be patient, and also will the Irani dame, for her series of blunders.

If a person is taking permission to organize a fest then that person will be responsible for the act within the premises if he is involved or not, this applies to all kind of rallies and event which takes place across the country
