Mallya loans: Chidambaram reminds BJP of NPA pile under Vajpayee tenure

Mumbai, Mar 15, (PTI): With alleged political meddling in loan appraisals to beleaguered businessman Vijay Mally coming under scanner, former finance minister P Chidambaram today hinted that there were inaccuracies during the erstwhile NDA regime as well.

"Please remember, in 2002-03, The Indian Express ran a series of articles called the 'Great Indian bank robbery'. Just jog your memory and ask yourself a question -- who was the PM? Nobody accuses the Prime Minister of being hand in glove," Chidambaram said at the Mumbai launch of his book 'Standing Guard: A Year in Opposition' this evening.

About Rs 9,000-crore loans to the near bankrupt Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) promoted by Mallya were granted during the decade-long tenure of the Congress-led UPA, where Chidambaram was at the helm of North Block for bulk of time.

Declining to make a specific comment on the case, saying he does not have the exact details, Chidambaram supported the ongoing probe against the bank officials.

"The banks that lent money to the person (Mallya), have to answer. Banks will be answerable if the gentleman has received undeserved loans from 20 banks," he said, wondering if Mallya had links with all the lenders.

Mallya and his grounded airline and other group companies owe around Rs 9,000 crore to 17 banks.

On GST Bill, he said the same legislation drafted by him, was stalled by BJP for five years during the UPA rule.

On its present status, Chidambaram said, the bill isn't stalled due to obstructionism of the Congress.

The Congress has raised three points of difference and the way forward, he said and conceded that the uniform taxation law will give a tremendous boost to the economy in the long run.

Stating that it is not the job of the Opposition to run Parliament, he said if the Opposition is not allowed to discuss a subject it finds important, it has to protest.

Chidambaram also supported the Aadhar project and sought to negate concerns on privacy as "exaggerated".

He said all the countries in the world have some form of identification system and the Election Commission did a similar job on a smaller case, which did not see any question on privacy.

Recounting how as a minister he had come across a college in Maharashtra with 700 fake students getting scholarships every month, he said the Aadhar will help save money for the government.

He also spoke in favour of more money being given to states and greater independence being given to them to formulate their own schemes and policies.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aggressive foreign policy, Chidamabaram underlined the need to assess the administration based on the outcome.

A MUST READ for all proud & patriot Hindustani's ....

Let me first quote the news item that appeared couple of days back in most of the prime business news papers - "IMF stresses the need for Hindustan's PSU banks balance sheet clean up",

what does it mean...? here we go ....

Mallya case may be only the beginning. Take a look at the list of Hindustan's top 10 corporate borrowers -

    1. Anil Ambani (ADAG) - Rs 1,25,000/- crores.
    2. Anil Agarwal (VEDANTA) - Rs 1,03,000/- crores.
    3. Ruias (ESSAR) - Rs 1,01,000/- crores
    4. ADANI - Rs 96,000/- crores
    5. GARG (JP Group) - Rs 75,163/- crores
    6. JINDAL (JSW Group) - Rs 58,171/- crores
    7. GMR - Rs 47,976/- crores
    8. LANCO - Rs 47,102/- crores
    9. Videocon - Rs 45,405/- crores
    10.GVK - Rs 33,933/- crores

TOTAL - Rs. 7.33 lac crores.
    (courtesy - google/catch news/top 10 corporate borrowers).

JP associates is already liquidating its assets to settle loan - the sense is that in all likely based on publicly available info the aggregate value of realization of its prime business assets so far is not reached 50% of the loan amount. I am not sure what will happen to the balance 50% of the loan amount.

Supreme court directed the RBI to name & shame the top corporate borrowing defaulters.

There is no need for much to guess the political allegiance of most of these top borrowers. Can we say that a big NPA scam is brewing in Hindustan's banking sector...?

Swachch Bharat kab shuru hoga...? if honcho's like Mallya were let of the hook despite under the nose of the big big talking govt of the day...?

For the past two years BJP is engaged only in blaming Congi for each & everything where it is failed miserably.

    Jai ho.., Jai Hind..

Mallya siphoned in billions but our politicians are passing the bucks one another. What Mallya did was absolutely disregard to system and we are the victims. What is SEBI doing? What is ED doing? What is IT doing? What is recovery tribunal doing? Why is CBI?Why Banks not initiated action against Mallya? Why Mallya's Passport not impounded?Mallya has enough means to settle debt but why he evading that? BECAUSE He is crocked businessman with political back up.Why can't GOVT OF INDIA or consortium of Banks ask for impounding of all his assets coupled with cancelling his passport status?

Middleman was none other than JOOTLEY, Mallaya met him one day before he left the country, that just goes to show that JOOTLEY advised him to flee the country or else banks have initiated action to impound his pass port. Let there be investigation and truth will come out.

Mr.Chidambaram,is a MBA from Harvard Business School and he is well known HC and SC Lawyer.Such a qualified person was Finance minister with UPA.
The present NDA will never have such qualified people in the BJP because such high qualified people don’t join RSS.
The BJP is not capable of handling the Mallya Scam and simply finding excuses every day.

Releasing the criminals and deceivers has been started from NDA Leader Vajapayee.

He released criminals and terrorists to Kandahar by escorting. Nevertheless they paid ransom also.

He couldn't reach to Kargil and the Kargil was occupied by Talibanies and Pakistanis.

The Chaaiwaala Cow government allowed to run-away Lalit-Modi on Humanitarian grounds.

Now Vijaya Mallya allowed freely to run-Out of the country.

After all this cow government promised us humans 15 lakhs and Black money of the Indians stashed in the Swiss Bank back to India.
