Udupi, Sep 29: The District Consultative Committee meeting on ‘Banking Development’ was held here recently.
Speaking on the occasion, K Devananda Upadhaya, deputy general manager, Syndicate Bank, said that the launching of Swarna Jayanti Grama Swarozgar Yojna (SGSY) in the year 1999-2000, has helped many BPL families over the last few years.
He further said that accordingly, 86% of the families have crossed the Below Poverty Line (BPL).This was mainly because of SGSY.
The progress was noticed by the survey conducted by the Rural Development and Self Employment Training Institute (RUDSETI) as per the guidelines of the zilla panchayat.
By the end of June 2007, business of Rs 7, 534 crore was achieved by the banks, therefore showing an increase of 21% over the corresponding period of last year, he added.
Pranesh Rao, deputy secretary, zilla panchayat, Nagesh Raikar, project director and G Premnath, lead district manager, were present.
