Bhagat Singh row: BJP attacks Tharoor, Cong distances itself

New Delhi, Mar 21, 2016 (PTI) : Shashi Tharoor has kicked up a controversy comparing JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who is facing sedition charges, with freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, drawing strong criticism today from BJP while Congress distanced itself from his remarks.

Addressing a group of students at the JNU last night, Tharoor, while listing the names of victims of sedition law under British rule had said Bhagat Singh was the Kanhaiya Kumar of his time.

"The biggest victims of sedition law under the British rule were Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Annie Besant," he said.

When a girl mentioned Bhagat Singh, Tharoor promptly responded, "Bhagat Singh was the Kanhaiya Kumar of his time."

Lashing out at Tharoor's comments, BJP said it was an insult to the "great freedom fighter" as well as all patriots of the country.

"Bhagat Singh went to the gallows chanting 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' while fighting for the country's independence. Comparing Kanhaiya Kumar with Bhagat Singh is an insult to the freedom fighter and all the patriots. Shashi Tharoor should tell if Kanhaiya is Bhagat Singh, then what are Rahul and Sonia Gandhi," BJP's Shahnawaz Hussain said.

Virtually disapproving Tharoor's remarks, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari on being asked, told reporters, "There has been only one Bhagat Singh. There is only one Bhagat Singh".

Tharoor on his part clarified that he did not intend to equate Kanhaiya with Bhagat Singh.

"You are finding one marginal thing which was said in response to a comment from the audience. Bhagat Singh was fighting colonial rule and foreign oppression and Kanhaiya is fighting for his beliefs in a very different democracy.

"So the situations are different but the comparison (was)-young, Marxist, idealist, passionately committed to their motherland, in their 20s...that's all," he said.

Congress should have the spine to stand up to its leaders and not run away like a coward. Comparing Kanhaiya and Bhagat Singh by Mr Shashi Taroor as victims of sedition law is a fact. In the case of Bhagat singh it was his struggle for the nations' freedom from the British that got him charges for sedition but in the case of Kanhaiya it is yet to be proved whether the sedition case slapped on him is false or true and the matter is subjudice. But the fact remains both are slapped with Sedition charges - on one by a foreign ruler and another by his own government.

I am sure that Tharoor thinks that Bhagat Singh is the younger brother of Navjyot Singh Siddhu. His History or for that matter everything is weak.
By the way have they found out his wife's killer? Why is he going so 'back into history' making comparisons? Did his wife too not fight valiantly against her killers? Who will he compare her to?
    Nonsense fellow.

Why are you agitating what Mr. Taroor said, about Bhagat Singh who fought colonial British rule. Where as Mr. Kanhaiya is fighting Azadi within Indian intolerance rule.

Why you have to drag Mr. Taroor's wife death here. This is unwarranted. What it has to do with his speech at JNU.

One should stop attack on one's private life matter rather stick to issue based opinion.

Why Bjp is worried Shashi Tharoors comments. First they should learn to honour the freedom fighter and the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi, and stop glorifying the killer Naturam Godse.

First of all Shashi Tharoor is an American Citizen. Who was imported by Congress to contest Thiruananthapuram constituency. Second point is he has a Pakistani journalist girl friend because of this row Sunanda his wife ?committed suicide. There is no chance of him knowing the history of India. Third point is he is confused totally. He is known for his controversial statements. He has praised Modi last July 2015.NEW DELHI: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor again praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, saying he leaves a "positive impression" during his foreign visits and that he does a "right thing" in which ever country he travels- The New Indian Express 18th July 2015. I think we have to ignore him.

Tharoor American? You are either kidding or just ignorant. For all we know, he was born to Indian Malayali parents in the UK, returned to India in his children, later earned some degrees in the US. That doesn't make him US citizen for heaven's sake!

This is little too much and uncalled for. Good he did not compare Kanhiya with Mahatma Ghandhi.

Didn't he know or forgot that Bhagat Singh is a Martyr who gave his live for Independence of India and Kanhiya is shouting slogans against India, breaking India in small pieces and worshipping his Guru "AFZAL"

Tharoor must be out of mind for comparing an Martyr with a TRAITOR.

Shame on you Shashi Tharoor and all your Congi army who is trying to run away from this issue.

Can Pappu and Italian mafia comment on this?
