Vijay Mallya brought 'terrible name' to India Inc: Arun Jaitley

Mumbai, Mar 22 (PTI): Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said the behaviour of liquor baron Vijay Mallya, the chairman of grounded Kingfisher Airlines and who has defaulted on Rs. 9,000 crore repayment to 17 banks, has brought the private sector entrepreneurs in India a "terrible name."

"He has not only brought himself a bad name, he has also brought a terrible name to private sector entrepreneurs in the country," Jaitley said.

Participating in a public discussion, Jaitley said, "The sooner he settles his dues to the banks the better it is for the private sector."

Jaitley also said Vijay Mallya cannot be ignorant about what happens to banks because of his default as there are other heavily-indebted companies which are settling their dues by selling their assets, but not Mallya.

"How long can you lead a life like this?" the Finance Minister asked, in an apparent reference to Vijay Mallya's lavish lifestyle.

Hinting that VIjay Mallya's case was not a simple case of bad business environment, Jaitley said it might not have been just a clean business failure.

"In a business failure, the whole sector suffers. In the same aviation sector, people who are in competition with him are surviving and some are even doing good. This shows there is a problem with the model (Mallya followed)," Jaitley said, and asked him to come back and settle the dues.

"I think there are sensibilities involved. You can't now totally segregate your personal wealth away from your business and then lead a very lavish lifestyle and (say) as far as the public banking system is concerned, I am unable to settle.

Without going into the facts of this case, I have no doubt in my mind that I probably will be more inclined with what the RBI Governor is saying," Jaitley said.

RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan had recently said that people like Mallya could not lead a lavish life on borrowed money and continue to remain a defaulter, after the liquor baron threw a lavish party to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Vijay Mallya, who left the country on March 4 for London, has not responded to the first summons issued by the ED, which has now asked him to appear on April 2.

Mallya alone should not be blamed for the bad state of his loans.State Bank has a bigger stake in this. Those who have processed the loan papers needs to be questioned. There ought to be under hand dealings in credit appraisal in that bank. The system of credit appraisal is through RACPC mode means there is no linkage between loan papers receiving branch, apprasing office, sanction office and disbursing office.I feel that this system is evolved intentionally to avoid any direct responsibility amongst appraising/sanctioning officials.End use of credit god alone knows. The biggest bank not necessarily be the biggest stake holder for NPAs but here it is true. Therefore a through investigation can only reveal the real modes operandi in Mally's loan becoming NPA.

    Mr. Shetty,
Because if Mallya stayed here, then PAPPU would have been exposed. Pappu has numerous stakes in Mallya's business.
BJP didn't want to once again shame PAPPU, because it's of no use. No body interested in that same old dramas of PAPPU in parliament.

how our FM jately giving such a statement when every action to recover the bad loans are in his hand.He says above " sooner he (mallya) repay the loan better for pvt. sector. can't the govt pass strict law to recover such bad loans of the banks. The goa court has passed decree in favour of sbi to sell mallya's bungalow in goa, but same mallya has approached court against order and surprisingly collector who supposed to attach the property is gone on leave.IF this is prevailing law in our country to recover bad loan of govt.banks, how the public deposits are safe in govt. owned banks. There are estimated rs.1,62,000 crores bad loans are outstanding in nationlised banks, why govt. is not taking quick action, and amend the existing law in favour of quick recovery..The Hyderabad court has served arrest warrant against mallay, knowing the fact he left the country before 3 days to his safe destination. secondly he is rajya sabha M.P. how CBI and home ministry allowed him leave the country. this is totally a conspiracy. The politicians are so hypocrite they talk one thing in parliament and press do the reverse in practice.

Vijaya Mallya landed in his private Jet, in Melbourne to attend Formula One,on last Sunday. Local news papers here reported that he was accorded a warm welcome with red carpet. Later on Premier of Victoria met him too. I understand that on 1st March he had met Jutely, before he had fled India on 2nd March. Can any one enlighten us about the contents of his discussion with Jutely on 1st March?
