Imphal, Mar 25 (IANS): Manipur Police are looking for an advocate who forged a court order to draw Rs.17 lakh from the pension account of a former state legislator who had died 14 years ago.

Advocate Zia Ur Rahman is alleged to have fraudulently taken Rs.17 lakh from the pension account of late Abdul Latif who had been a legislator representing the Mayang Imphal assembly constituency, said a police officer.

Rahman acted as counsel in a family court for the four wives of Abdul Latif, and claimed their late husband's pension and property, the police officer said.

The family court ruled that the first three wives are legal wives.

However, police sources said counsel tampered with the order of the family court to withdraw money from the late lawmaker's pension account.

On a complaint filed by fourth wife Nahapishak Bibi, the state police made the other three wives -- Rashida Bibi, Leiphon Bibi and Tombi Bibi -- the accused in the alleged fraud.

Later police investigation showed that it was advocate Zia Ur Rahman who had taken undue advantage of the illiteracy of the three wives to forge the family court order.

"There are numerous cases of forgery to draw illegally pension and other benefits," a police officer said.

If prima facie a case is established, there will be demands to strike off Rahman's name from the membership list of the All Manipur Bar Association, said an advocate.
