Myanmar lifts emergency in western state


Yangon, Mar 29 (IANS): The Myanmar government has lifted the state of emergency imposed on western Rakhine state since 2012, said an announcement of the current President's Office published on Tuesday.

The state of emergency was lifted across the state as no more threats to lives and property of the people were found, according a report submitted by the Rakhine state government, the announcement said, Xinhua reported.

The announcement came a days before a new government was to take office.

As unrest and violence triggered by communal conflict in Rakhine state escalated then, the Myanmar government declared the state of emergency in western coastal Rakhine state on June 10, 2012.
