Modi can be a major ally in war against terror: EU lawmakers

Brussels, Mar 30 (PTI): Prominent members of the European Parliament today said Prime Minister Narendra Modi can be EU's "major ally" in the global war against terror and should be proactively engaged as India has the "first-hand knowledge" of dealing with such issues.

Extending a warm welcome, the members termed Modi "a person of great prominence on India's political landscape."

"The European Parliament believes Modi can be a major ally of the EU in the global war against terror," they said after meeting Modi at Hotel Steigenberger this morning.

"EU can learn a lot from the Indian experience in fighting Islamic extremism as India has first-hand knowledge in dealing with the issue," they said in a letter.

The members said the EU "should engage Indian decision makers led by Modi in a proactive dialogue and focus on overlapping interests, including maritime security, terrorism, space and cyber defence."

Modi arrived here today for a hectic day-long visit during which he will attend the India-EU Summit.

Belgian capital Brussels, which was attacked by suicide bombers last week, is the first leg of Modi's three-nation four-day tour which will take him to the US and Saudi Arabia.

Since the terrorist attack on March 22, the Brussels airport is yet to be fully operational and Modi's Special Air India plane had to land at the Brussels Military Airport.

Belgian Army has been deployed for the prime minister's visit. Due to an enhanced terror threat, additional security has been put in place for Modi's public interaction with the Indian diaspora here.

To be a peacemaker one should be at peace within himself and learn to love his enemies. Unfortunately when Mr Modi opens his mouth, hearts break, division emerges. He can never bring peace. His speech in Parliament, during elections, during public gatherings abroad does not bring unity but division. This is not the way to combat terrorism. If Mr Modi can solve the Maoist problem in India successfully then we can agree with what the EU lawmakers say. Let the EU lawmakers not boost the ego of the Indian PM by making such flattery statements and then force our armed forces to fight terror on their soil or a foreign soil. Just the way we were fooled by sending IPKF to Srilanka. We have enough problems at home especially some created by some of the PM's partymen/leader's statements on Nationalism etc.

Since EU is facing series of terror attacks even at their H.Q. which were not known to them.
They are seriously seeking help from our PM who have dealt with similar terrorism for a long period. What's wrong in it? Obviously anybody would ask for help when needed!

jeevan & Team what is your opinion.?
Europe, Superpowers and Muslim countries are tired in dealing with them or using force and now they are trying to drag India into the controversies.(war against ISIS.
We cannot say no but we cannot simply watch when world countries take united action. We need to join hands in eradicating this evil.
The price we have to pay may be high but lasting solution should
be achieved by destroying the evil power. Even China should be included in this joint mission.
    No gain without pain.
Parliament and opposition need to have their say in the matter.
