Mangaluru, Apr 5: The chief district and sessions court here has sentenced a person charged with attempting to peddle ganja to five years rigorous imprisonment (RI). A fine of Rs 50,000 has also been imposed on him, failing to pay which will make him liable for an additional nine months of rigorous jail term.
The convicted accused happens to be K Ibrahim alias Kalandar (25) from Koila village in Puttur taluk. He had been arrested by Coastal Security Police Force inspector, Gangi Reddy and staff on September 11, 2012 when trying to sell ganja at Somanatheshwara extension in Someshwara village in the taluk. 3.04 kg of ganja and car had been seized during the raid, and inspector, Gangi Reddy, had completed investigation and filed charge sheet in the court.
Judge of the chief district and sessions court, Uma M G, handed down the setence on April 4. The second accused in the case, Ahmed Rizwan, stands acquitted for want of conclusive evidence.
The prosecution was represented in this case by public prosecutor, Pushparaj Adyantaya.
