Army patrol fired upon, search for militants begins in Kashmir village

Srinagar, April 5 (IANS): A cordon and search operation was launched on Tuesday by the security forces in north Kashmir's Kupwara district after guerrillas fired at an army patrol.

A senior police officer told IANS in summer capital Srinagar that "a patrol party of the army was fired upon by militants in Jindyal (Dardpora) village of Kupwara district today (Tuesday).

"Immediately after the firing incident, security forces cordoned off the area and started a search operation to trace the militants," he said.

"So far, no contact has been established with the militants".

In security forces' parlance, establishing "contact" refers to the tracing of the guerrillas and the possible exchange of fire between the two sides.
